The Netherlands is a smaller European country that is nonetheless packed full of many sights, and has many stereotypical images associated with it (clogs, windmills, tulips). The capital of Amsterdam has some outstanding museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, each with countless numbers of treasured paintings. Amsterdam’s vices (Red Light District and hash bars) also attract many people, even if only to look around. Many people seek out the party atmosphere that Amsterdam is reputed for. Despite the attention that Amsterdam receives, there is certainly much to interest people in the rest of the Netherlands. The country is small, so getting around to various sights is fairly quick. Biking is a popular means of transport and is an option for getting around. You can head out to the countryside to see the traditional windmills and the massive Aalsmeer flower auction, or visit one of the many nearby cities, each of which has its own attractions for visitors.

For example, Utrecht has a massive 14th century cathedral with a 365 ft. tower. The Hague is the seat of government for the Netherlands (although not the capital due to the Dutch constitution) as well as the home of the United Nations' fledgling International Criminal Court. It is a cosmopolitan city that has some excellent palaces such as the Mauritshuis. Delft is a very pretty and quaint town with many old buildings. It is also known as being the home of the blue and white Delftware china. Rotterdam is a large and bustling port town with an atmosphere that is quite different from the rest of the Netherlands. Haarlem is a small town close to Amsterdam that has a wonderful old town center.

Haarlem's name, in New York City (which was originally called New Amsterdam), reflects Holland's unique colonial past, in which a European people grew wary of the excesses of colonial power, administration, management  and ultimately, guilt.  This was the seed of Dutch liberalism and and intellectual integrity enjoyed by few nations today.

Much (over half) of the Netherlands is below sea level, so the country is protected by a series of dikes and coastal defenses. They have been much upgraded since flooding in 1953 killed thousands of people.  The flood defenses are perhaps the best in the world now and add to Dutch awareness and belief in the value of land, resources and life.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Netherlands
By all means visit the markets, but watch out for pick pockets, they are very organised and experienced. Special places to visit include the Royal Palace, Madame Tousaude's for some local wax and if you must, a local coffee shop, but then remember the first item. Amsterdam isn't that representative of Holland any more, if you really want to experience it, head to one of the smaller towns. Centraal Station will take you pretty much anywear quickly and easily. If you are there and they do a public address warning about the pick pockets, don't do what everyone else automatically does, which is clap their hands to where they keep their wallets. Anyone would think the crims were paying the people to do the PA's lol.

Alkmaar is above all Holland's cheese town. During the season from the first Friday of April to the first Friday of September a traditional cheese market is being held here on Friday mornings between 10 and 12.30. The cheeses are sold by dealers on a clap of hands. Thereupon the 400 year old cheese porters' guild goes into action, carrying the cheese off on barrows after the lot has been weighed at the Waag (the official scales). In the Waaggebouw - in which the scales are housed - a cheese museum that tells everything about dairy farming has been established.

Alkmaar is historical with around 400 monuments. The Waag, dating back in its earliest form to the 14th century, the 16th century town-hall, Grote St. Laurens Church and the many courtyards, facades and canals give the town an ambience all of its own. With the past as a setting, the town has a modern stock of shops offering a wide choice. Besides the predominantly small shops in the old centre, the Noorder Arcade with large scale shopping facilities stands by the side of the Noord Holland Canal.

Alkmaar is the biggest town in the region and therefore also its centre for going out. There is a range of restaurants of various kinds, pavement cafés and coffee houses, as well as theatres and museums. Numerous events are also organised including The Relief of Alkmaar, Culinary Plaza and Cheese Town Jazz. Relaxation can also be found in the Geestmerambacht recreational area close by, and the parks and sports facilities.

Maastricht is located in the south of the Netherlands, close to Liege and Aachen. It has a more southern, relaxed atmosphere than other parts of The NetherlandsThe centre of the city is especially attractive, due to its wealth of historic buildings; some 1450 monuments are protected by law. Care is taken that both new and renovated buildings maintain the period atmosphere of their surroundings. Because of its heritage value, the whole of Maastricht city centre has been declared a 'protected area'.
