By all means visit the markets, but watch out for pick pockets, they are very organised and experienced. Special places to visit include the Royal Palace, Madame Tousaude's for some local wax and if you must, a local coffee shop, but then remember the first item. Amsterdam isn't that representative of Holland any more, if you really want to experience it, head to one of the smaller towns. Centraal Station will take you pretty much anywear quickly and easily. If you are there and they do a public address warning about the pick pockets, don't do what everyone else automatically does, which is clap their hands to where they keep their wallets. I loved this city! I agree w/Earl's comment, pay attention and get lost. I walked for days. It was cool but sunny and the walking was so easy. A good travel book will explain many of the sights and the people are very friendly. The architecture, and the hidden garden, and the beer...all good. The Anne Frank house was deeply moving. I was lucky to see alot b/c of friends that live there. Man did i miss their great transport system on returning to Georgia.

If you are preparing your holidays in Amsterdam and you want to live in an appartment during this time but not spend much money for it, don't be shocked if you have a surprising meeting with mice there!;) because of the canals mice are a big problem of Amsterdam and it's difficult to get them out.. well, but you can try to take your cat with you!;) one thing you need to do is definitely a boat-trip trough Amsterdam's canals!:) it's very nice! another thing to see is the Anne Frank museum, it's very impressive! and don't miss to go in a coffee bar, there are really nice ones, and it could be that you will meet there some cute cats!;) I think for these people who love to smoke weed Amsterdam is the best city to go!;) so, Amsterdam is a really nice city, and i think the best time to go there in spring or autumn!:) have fun!;)

Amsterdam... land of water and land, history and culture, coupled with modern 'liberties' and lifestyles. Our holiday here was a mixture of highs and lows, some things we absolutely loved, and other things made us feel very uncomfortable. I guess this can be said of most cities in the world, as there is good and bad everywhere, but for us, we had never encountered this type of element before.

We neither loved nor hated it. But we are glad we went.

What appealed to us was the lapping of the waters as our canal boat gently steered down the canal, watching the towering, skinny buildings on either side of us. Watching the young lady sunbathing on the roof of her river-boat; the young man beating his dust-filled carpet with a rod; the young girl curled up on the windowsill overlooking the canal, engrossed in the novel she was reading.

It offers, to the viewer and visitor, an intimate glimpse into the life of Amsterdam and is very special.

Amsterdam is a wonderful city. I stayed at the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel. It was a great choice. It was situated directly at the beginning of one of the biggest shopping streets Leidesplein. Really awesome was the Amsterdam Dungeon of which I found out by accident. It is really worth it. Also if you want to see Madame Tussauds you should buy a combi-ticket for both at the Dungeon. It's cheaper there. At the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijskmuseum I spend a few hrs. They are really big and worth seeing it if you are interested in culture and art. Don't miss to go on a canal cruise. They are a little pricey but really something you must see. For a nice evening crash in to the American Bar in the American Hotel, where you will find a huge wall of fame directly at Leidseplein or at the Pub situated at the end of the Leidseplein where it enters the Leidsestraat.

Amsterdam is the greatest city (until I visited Toronto) in the whole wide world, according to me! It's nice and bustling, though quiet and soft. Maybe it reminds me of home - it's close to water, the pretty buildings and the street cars in the middle of the road. It seems like an old fashioned Stockholm! But Amsterdam comes alive in a whole different way at night. There's the Red Light District, but also just in the city, like Leidseplein or by the Central Station there's plenty of clubs, coffee shops, vending machines (for that drunken snack) and people out and about. It's busy and nice, I even walked home, for almost an hour and it felt safe and conforting. The people are friendly, you see English here and there, and I've even learned that Dutch is not that different from Swedish so I've been practicing and readin signs and menues, it's not going that bad!
If you want an all round experience, visit Amsterdam. There's culture, night life and history all in one. You'll never forget it and you'll always long back.

Grashoppers Club is a cool location with cool people and cool music

not too many fancy restaurants. in some of the fast food places you can hear tarkan!s music:) tulips and all the other flower are sold everywhere.It is scattered all around the town. for me it is a place of dikes and bikes...ask grass menus. it is not as rich as our eageon kitchen olive oil vegetable plates:))

The Queensday or in Dutch 'Koniginnendag', is celebrated throughout the Netherlands every year on April 30 (if this is a Sunday, on the 29th). Live music and other events take place during that day, people parade on the canals. If you don't like big crowds with people getting drunk and urinating everywhere avoid the central places like Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein, Nieuwmarkt etc. during that day. You can find a more relaxed atmosphere in the Jordaan and parts of Oud-Zuid, for example with small Bands playing in pubs, and if you are lucky you might find a seat. Another alternative is to avoid Amsterdam completely and go to Leiden or Utrecht where you will find a more relaxed atmosphere.

Free coffee in Amsterdam? It's possible. Just go into the Lucky Strike shop, Leidsestraat, and you will enjoy free coffee or tea, listening to the good music in the same time. If you smoke, you will enjoy even more;-)

Jedná sa o skanzen veterných mlynov a iných zaujímavých budov, a miesto kde sa demonštrujú naživo činnosti ako výroba drevákov , syrov a porcelánu.
Najlepšie je dostať sa tam pred piatou poobede, neskôr sa mlyny zatvárajú. Vstup do areálu je zdarma, do mlynov je nejaký symbolický poplatok, do výrobní zdarma (žijú z predaja suvenírov)
Pomerne drahé je platené parkovisko pred areálom (finta na turistov)
Je tu aj reštaurácia v ktorej vyrábajú pannekoeken, palacinky o ktorých píšem viac v sekcii Hlad. (veľmi dobré, odporúčam)
[14.09.1999] Brat Fras pýtal že reku ako sa tam dá dostať verejnou dopravou. Nuž netuším, nikdy som tam nebol inak ako autom, ale našiel som na webe nasledovný návod (ak to niekto overíte, dajte vedieť): Vlakom z Amsterdam CS smer Alkmaar, vystúpiť na zastávke Koog-Zaandijk, a od stanice to je 10 minút pešo. Jedno dôležité upozornenie: v Holandsku sú v zásade v nedelu obchody zatvorené. Existuje zopár výnimiek v strede mesta, a raz za čas je vyhlásená Nákupná nedeľa, ale spoliehať sa na to neodporúčam. Trhy Albert CuypMarkt Najväčší trh v Amsterdame, nachádza sa na Albert Cuypstraat od pondelka do soboty. Dostanete tu všetko: Syr kravský, syr kozí, ryby veľké malé placaté strašidelné, chobotnice, kraby a iné morské potvory, zeleninu európsku i africkú, rôzne bizarné ovocie, košele, čapice, kabelky a bižutériu, hodinky, elektrickú šnúru, zvonček na bicykel, päťkilový téglik s gélom na vlasy a tak...
Blší trh na Waterlooplain Klasický blšák, ale vo veľkom štýle (od pondelka do soboty). Voľakedy to bol židovský trh s bežným tovarom každodennej spotreby, po druhej svetovej vojne došlo k zmene zamerania a v sedemdesiatych rokoch zaznamenal tento trh najväčší rozkvet. neskôr bol kvôli výstavbe velý trh značne zmenšený ale aj dnes má ešte 300 stánkov s vojenskými helmami, lampášmi z bicyklov, second-hand oblečeniami, starými komixmi, podivuhodnými etnickými soškami, ochodenými bagandžami, hračkami... Dá sa (a oplatí sa ) jednať o cenu.
Kvetinový trh Singel Turistická klasika, kvetinový trh postavený na kanáli menom Singel, na plávajúcich pontónoch. Kupodivu ceny sú tu celkom priaznivé takže sa oplatí aj čo-to pokúpiť.
Je na konci Kalverstraat ked zahnete doprava. Na ulici popri tomto kvetinovom trhu je aj niekoľko zaujímavých bizarných obchodíkov, odporúčam Vianočný obchod, kde celý rok predávajú vianočné ozdoby.

Obchody Zmes obchodov o ktorých si myslím že stojí za to sa v nich zastaviť, aj keby človek nič nekúpil. Kalverstraat, Leidsestraat, Nieuwendijk Tri ulice ktoré naozaj stojí za to si prejsť. Je tam značne husto, oplatí sa tam ísť cez pracovný deň kedy je tam trochu väčší kľud. Po oboch stranách oboch ulíc sú obchodíky s fashion, s topánkami, zo suvenírmi, knihami, hudbou a tak. Najlepší (a bohužiaľ aj najdrahší) obchod s tričkami v Amsterdame. Toto sú tí ktorých všetci ostatní kopírujú.
Skutočne stojí za to sa sem pozrieť, je to len na skok od Damu. Ceny tričiek sa tu pohybujú okolo 45 NLG takže ide skôr o inšpiráciu... Pozor sú tu VEĽMI alergickí na fotenie.

Stay at "Bob's youth hostel" and buy your green stuff at the "Bulldog Coffee Shop" and it's a fun, albeit hard to recall, trip.
