New Zealand

New Zealand is a land of great natural beauty that also offers an outstanding array of outdoor activities for visitors. There are many excellent tramping tracks, including eight well-maintained and very popular Great Walks that cover much of the finest scenery in New Zealand. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Milford Track, a beautiful and stunning hike amidst mountains and rainforest that has been called the “Finest Walk in the World”. Other walks take you through scenery immortalized in the Lord of the Rings such as the blasted landscape and volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. Still others take you up to humongous glaciers and snow capped mountains. The town of Queenstown has become an adventure center for travelers wanting adrenaline activities such as skydiving, jet boating, and bungy jumping.

The cities of New Zealand have much to offer too. The capital of Wellington is known for its stunning harbour and views, as well as its Victorian character. The Te Papa Museum gives an outstanding look at New Zealand’s history and culture, from Maori exhibits to virtual bungy jumping. Surrounded by water, Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city. It is stylish and cosmopolitan, and is also known for its islands and 48 extinct volcanoes. Auckland’s massive 328 meter tall Sky Tower offers great views over the landscape.

Opua, North Island, New Zealand
The car ferry will save a long drive.
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand
Dont just stop at the car park to see the seals, walk the whole peninsular. Depending on the tide, walk along the beach and back over the headland, or the other way round. Or be different, park at the southern end of the walk, its much quieter.
Franz Josef Glacier, South Island, New Zealand
Go to the Blue Ice Cafe, drink lots of whatever you drink eat the great food then hop in a chopper do the overland Glacier tour then get out go to the info centre get tickets for a horse ride and do the sunset beach tour. Than stay at the YHA or any of the other great venues. Rafting is also a hit you can fly into the alps get dropped off and do anything from 1-3 day tours. Avoid the new climbing wall and talk to the locals because they know where to go, make sure you meet a guy called Scumbag aka Greg Brown and you will be the luckiest person in the world. Also the best things are 30km before hand in HARI HARI because thats where the Wildside backpackers is get the hut out the back and stay with Dan and Kath for as long as you want, suggested minimum is a month.
Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand

Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand
Listen out for the screams at night as people do bungee jumping in the dark, on the hill looking over the town!!
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
Make sure your luggage is light, as in one on board bag if just visiting or one backpack, briefcase, overnight bag if staying over a weekend if flying nationwide. International travellers would well benefit by carrying amongst their onboard luggage a light, waterproof parka/jacket, a compact hat or a warm cardigan. Wellington, even on it's sunniest days can still be a wee bit nippy or cool.
Kaitaia, North Island, New Zealand
Always travel with someone who knows the area very well as local knowledge is ALWAYS the best. Safety in numbers, yes. Always remain with your group if on a guided tour, wandering off and doing your own thing may upset the natives and so as the old saying goes, IF IN ROME, DO AS THE ROMANS DO. Light, waterproof jacket, sunhat, or compact umbrella wouldnt go astray and a pair of good walking shoes and some 'gummies' wouldnt go amiss either. Also, boil water if in a hotel or camping ground or buy bottled water.
Tauranga, North Island, New Zealand
Take a good amount of money either in the way of an EFTPOS card, credit card or debit card. There is soooo much to do in and around Tauranga. The food is great and the nightlife isnt bad either. Try Valentines Restaurant on the wharf. It's really good value.
Stewart Island, South Island, New Zealand
All Kiwis should experience Stewart Island at least once in their lifetime so to all international and nation wide travellers - go see for yourself! The seafood is some of the purest most succulent in the whole of Aotearoa, the paua are the creamiest and most delicious when cooked on a piping hot char-brick at one of the waterfront restaurants there. Take your camera and try absolutely everything on offer! It's a fantastic, mysterious, beautiful place! And we have it right here ... on our back doorstep!
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
When you go to Auckland be sure to visit the Auckland Skytower as its amazing going to the top of the tower in the glass elevator!
Te Anau, South Island, New Zealand
If you are into watersports or fishing you should go to Te Anau cause its got a really great lake for all these activities. You should also go on the boat trip from Te Anau to go and see the glow worm caves which is great at night.

The zoo is a must! there are loads of beautiful parks around the city centre. Late january to mid february is the best time to visit to take full advantage of the awesome outdoor kiwi lifestyle. This town is probably best for those interested in architecture, but the waterfront is enjoyable for all.

You can climb the track to the top of Lion's Rock for a great view.. remember your jandals cuz the sand gets crazy hot!
Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand
just enjoy
Maketu, North Island, New Zealand
Drive to the end of Town Point Rd, then keep walking along the cliffs to the end of the point. Go over the fench, through the grass and under the big pohutukawa tree. There is a seat there and some awesome views, best when the sun is setting or rising.
Tokoroa, North Island, New Zealand
The Burger King in Tokoroa is pretty reliable, and there's a nifty shortcut to the West Taupo Road.

When u r in Wellington, always take at least a light jacket with u. The wind can be bitter cold.
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Visit the west coast beaches.
National Park, North Island, New Zealand
In winter (mid June - late October) make sure you hit the slopes skiing/boarding at Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand's largest ski field!
Mercer, North Island, New Zealand
Don't forget to buy cheese from the cheese shop at this "stop-over" town. Oh, and if you're in there in the morning, tuck into some breakfast at the Pokeno cafe there.
Invercargill, South Island, New Zealand
Its pretty cold down there!
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Take a trip to the island TiriTiri Matangi in the Hauraki Gulf...it's the best opportunity you'll have of seeing (and hearing) the Kiwi (you'll need to stay overnight though, which is possible with prior arrangement, as the Kiwi is nocturnal).
Bannockburn, South Island, New Zealand
Best winery - Mt Difficulty
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand
Mountain biking is really popular here; if you're fit make sure you try out some of the tracks.
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
Watch out for the earth quakes here -- not because they're frightening, but because it's frequent and a cool experience!
Napier, North Island, New Zealand
Napier is the springboard for the Hawkes Bay wine region. You'll need to decide which areas to visit before you head off as there are so many cellar doors you'll run out of time for any favourites if you try to do them all. Gimblett Gravels is a personal favourite and is close to Napier township...
Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand
Buy a gas mask because this place stinks of rotten eggs i.e sulphur.
Waihau Bay, North Island, New Zealand
A good place to stay on the long drive around East Cape with an excellent motor camp, good scenery and even better fishing...
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
One of the best things about Wellington is you can walk between just about everything you'll want to see. A very creative city with sculpture and art everywhere..one of the best places in NZ to see a wide range of contemporary NZ art.
Piha, North Island, New Zealand
Tourist attraction time! Piha was used for the film "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian".
Paihia, North Island, New Zealand
Hi guys Paihia is pretty straight forward. Stick to the main road along the coast and you are sweet. A variety of services are available including the ferry over to russel and adventure boating on the Mac Attack whick i personally recommend. Your cheapest accomadation available is on Kings road in the form of 2 particular hostles, "The mouse trap" and "Pepper Tree Lodge". There is a nice bar opposite these also called Pepper tree. However I prefer the bar at the docks called 32 degrees from memory. Safe traveling people, Keep it fun tho ;-)
Hokitika, South Island, New Zealand
Just outside Hokitika just next to Lake Mahinapua is a little place affectionately known as the Pu Pub. Its a brilliant place with lots of history. Anyone staying here will have a great time and hopefully get to meet Les!
Taupo, North Island, New Zealand
Skydive Taupo! Highest skydive in the world at 15,000 feet! Definately worth a look. Loads more as well, bungy, kayak etc! Or just chill by the lake and have a great night out at Element Bar or Holy Cow!
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand
Dunner's night life is dead without the students...if you are looking for a crazy night out on the town, watch out for summer holidays. Although the Bog goes OFF.
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand
Definitely worth a visit to the cathedral downtown, before taking the cable cars up to the hill and look over the beautiful landscape New Zealand has to offer.
Masterton, North Island, New Zealand
Just a little tip if you get really bad car sickness, take the train over the hills to masterton instead of driving. The hills are really bad.
Waitomo Caves, North Island, New Zealand
Do not pass up the opportunity to go Blackwater Rafting in Waitomo! Blackwater rafting combines rappelling, climbing, rafting, caving, swimming and adventure!
Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand
Don't forget your bl**dy sunblock. take it with you. SPF 45 if poss. The burn rate in summer (Dec-Marchish) is 8 mins to lobster city. seriously.
Lake Tekapo, South Island, New Zealand
Ein Ort welcher in Neuseeland besucht werden muss. Herrlich die Farbe des Sees. Und Abends einen Besuch in der suedlichsten Sternwarte. Gewaltiger Sternenhimmel :D
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand
has loads of whales!!!! and seals..nice
Kelvin Grove, North Island, New Zealand
Comfortable suburb of Palmy, 5 miles out. Neat gardens, neat roads.
Tauranga, North Island, New Zealand
Absolutes Highlight ist der Besuch von Mount Maunganoui neben Tauranga. Der Ort ist nicht nur ein beliebter Surfort. Er hat zwei wunderschoene Straende und ein Berg, von welchem die Aussicht atemberaubend ist.
Hanmer Springs, South Island, New Zealand
Best Hot Springs in South Island, Dont forget your swimmers...best to go in Winter, and if your lucky it will snow....makes for an amazing experience. Pleanty of range in accomodation options and great little eateries.
Franz Josef Glacier, South Island, New Zealand
Wear Sturdy shoes, don't go when its raining, allow time to soak up the beauty of it.
Spreydon, South Island, New Zealand
just out of christchurch...its ok....
Taupo, North Island, New Zealand
Take a camera because National Park across Lake Taupo is breathtaking.
Linwood, South Island, New Zealand
not the best...however has a good school..
Invercargill, South Island, New Zealand
take your gum boots, a warm jacket and a bottle of red wine!
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand
Spent new years 07/08 in Dunedin at Heather and Dave's place, and it was awesome! We did the Speights Brewery tour (then consumed 14 sample glasses of beer) and went to the Cadbury Factory too, both were good fun. I loved all the old buildings down there, and thought it was a really nice city. It felt like a much smaller city than Auckland (which was a good thing). Also tried running up Baldwin Street (worlds steepest road) but wasn't able to jog all the way up...
Miranda, North Island, New Zealand
Miranda is a pretty little spot on the Firth of Thames - if you are into twitching then there is a famous naturist society based here. Also check out the natural mineral hot pools - great place to relax and have a bbq, good cabins etc at the hot pools too and only 10 minutes away is the Kaiaua Pub which is always good for dinner and a drink or three!
Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand
Make sure you don't miss this town on your way to Taupo!
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Fantastic vibrant city, always feel safe day or night. never feels crowded. take a ferry across to devenport, great fish and chips.
Gisborne, North Island, New Zealand
Gisborne is a really isolated beach town. This means it rocks in the summer, and gets really dull in the winter.
Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand
Hamilton is a great place to raise a family! But the nightlife can get a bit claustrophobic after a while (same faces, same places). It is quite central and within a few hours travel to most interesting places in the north island.
Waipu, North Island, New Zealand
Waipu is a small town in Bream Bay, in the Northland Region of New Zealand, with a Scottish heritage. Waipu was the centre of a significant Presbyterian settlement led by Rev. Norman McLeod, a Presbyterian Minister who led his people from the Highlands of Scotland to New Zealand via St. Ann's, Nova Scotia and Australia. Five shiploads of settlers arrived at Waipu in the 1850s. For more details about the original European settlers, see the Rev. Norman McLeod entry. A highlight of the town's calendar is the annual Highland Games held at New Year. Just outside the town are the Waipu Caves, which contain a significant population of glowworms. In 1914, a railway branch line from the North Auckland Line was surveyed to Waipu to serve agricultural activity in the area. Construction of the line was delayed due to World War I, but by 1920, 25 men were employed in the construction of formation. However, by 1924, private motor vehicles were becoming more common and railway lines to lowly populated rural areas accordingly became less necessary. Due to the lack of significant industrial activity in the Waipu area, the branch line was no longer seen as economic and construction was cancelled before any rail tracks were laid.[1] However, a new railway line, the Marsden Point Branch, is currently proposed for construction and will follow a route similar to that of the abortive Waipu line.
Rolleston, South Island, New Zealand
Rolleston was where my mother was born. It was just outside of Burnham which had a major army camp. Everytime we drove south from Christchurch, or took the train, we would go through Rolleston. It was just a small town in those days, serving the farming community by which it was surrounded.
Kumeu, North Island, New Zealand
A wine growing are to the west of Auckland in which a number of Dalmatian families settled and established vineyards. Some of the wines from this area can be great, although they are probably being squezzed out now by the spread of Auckland.
Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand
bypass ths place!!! its a bore!!!
Kuaotunu, North Island, New Zealand
Loved the gravel road up the hill which ended up taking you to Obama Bay - a beach where the waves crash on the shore - not on you as you swim about. Glad we decided to be adventurous (as you can be).
Coromandel, North Island, New Zealand
We've been to the Coromandel Penisula about 2 weeks ago now and i liked it a lot. But you really need a decent car to see the best bits. Coromandel town is pretty quaint with a few nice cafe's that do a good breakfeast. Heading further north it gets really rugged and beutiful rough gravel roads with nothing but stunning crimson pohutukawa trees to keep you from going over the cliffedge. Just find the end of the road and enjoy the emptyness, the end of the world feeling.
Hawera, North Island, New Zealand
My hometown, and a fantastic wee place it is. Not the most pumping off places, on a world scale, but friendly people, plenty of good food and a handful of good restaurants - particular the Two Chefs and the local Indian. On State Highway 3, it's a nice stopover. Have dinner, go to the local pool, or a beach (Ohawe is nice, or Waihi), then take the surf highway (#45) around the coast to New Plymouth.
Tarurutangi, North Island, New Zealand
Tarurutangi is a small rural 'community' between Egmont Village and Bell Block. There's even a hall and tennis grounds. It is a dairy farming area. Most people probably wouldn't know its called Tarurutangi except the people living in the area. That's how I know lol
Bluff, South Island, New Zealand
Not much going on in Bluff-yummy oysters if u like your seafood, the ex paua shell house and a nice walk around the coast from the road sign. The best thing it's got going for it is you can catch a boat to Stewart Island from there-but remember to take a sick bag! (foveaux strait can get pretty rough)
Kerikeri, North Island, New Zealand
One of my favourite Northland towns-a quaint little town centre with a superb Italian restaurant, boutique cinema and loads of foodie factory shops on the road out. The YHA is a good place 2 stay and if you're into your history u can go check out the pa and stone store just outta town. Beware summer holidays thou-the one way bridge at the end of town can get crazy queues and the supie in town is madness!
Waitakere, North Island, New Zealand
Waitakere is one of those places that a lot of people miss as they fly in to Auckland and leave just as quickly. The black iron sand beaches of the west coast, gannet colonies and surf beaches of Muriwai and Piha and scenic drive which has some amazing views, windy roads and native bush.
Browns, South Island, New Zealand
Browns is a very tiny farming town. I delivered a jukebox there once and in doing so saw the whole town. It consists of a town hall, a pub and a few houses.
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
Wellington is now my home town and is a fantastic place to live with good access to the rest of NZ, but no the World if you want to globe trot. To get the best out of the compact city you perhaps need to plan your visit to coincide with an event to really get the character of the place, nothing is better than the International Rugby Sevens.
Blenheim, South Island, New Zealand
This town is like my second home. You get the feel that everyone knows everyone, which i have found can be quite true. Its a safe, small town. Most everything is in walking distance. A great place for retieries
Waimauku, North Island, New Zealand
Waimauku is a fairly quiet small community between the Helensville and Kumeu countryside. There's a primary school, dairy shops and a medical centre as well as a few restaurants lodges. Theyre also building a new mall on the main highway.
Muriwai Beach, North Island, New Zealand
The most beautiful place in the world!! paradise! very small beach community on the west coast. muriwai beach, the main beach is good for swimming and beginner surfers as there are lifeguards on duty in the summer, and maori bay which is where most of the locals surf. There are no lifeguards at maori bay and strong rips. There's a top shop for takeaways and the bottom shop (Sand Dunez Cafe) has excellent food and ice cream. There's a caravan park for campers and horse riding centres on ohia road as well as "Only Fools and Horses Homestay" . Many hidden beauties in this little paradise.
Waitomo Caves, North Island, New Zealand
Well, um the Waitomo Caves would have to be one of nz most spectacular places. explore a whole new world underground. Caving in Waitomo is way up there with the most exciting thrilling things ive ever done.
North Shore, North Island, New Zealand
As New Zealand cities go, it is quite modern. There is a distinct contrast with other 'burbs of Auckland, the money is conspicuous (less dirty kids with no shoes). Compared to other places around the world though, a quiet back water. Not as good as its inhabitants believe.
Napier, North Island, New Zealand
Like a run down south coast england riviera resort, but 30 years ago. The inhabitants "dine out" on stories of quakes, the damage, the survivors and the glories of last century. Short conversation then. Plagued by gangs.
Manukau City, North Island, New Zealand
Manakau City? Ha, ha, ha. The worlds worst joke. A shopping mall, a Japanese University and ..........don't park your car here during the night.
Linton, North Island, New Zealand
Linton is one of the homes of the NZ Army. Known throughtout the decades as a party garrison, where all the attendees can fit in one room. A toilet.
Aokautere, North Island, New Zealand
Home of Massey University, the japanese school and the area known as "pork chop hill". Park up, turn up the heat and do what comes naturally.
Wanganui, North Island, New Zealand
Dog box. Avoid. Keep your doors locked and keep driving to New Plymouth even if your eyes are closing due to fatigue.
Taupo, North Island, New Zealand
Beautiful lake, fantastic views, Police force that adopt a clear policy of "not worth the paper work" if the crime is commited against visitors, particularly English tourists. You have to die there to be noticed.
Turangi, North Island, New Zealand
Amoebic dysentry central. Place relies on hot spas and baths for lucrative tourist dollars. Littered with signs advising bathers to not submerge faces. Water is choked with diseases even antibiotics can't cure. Human sewer !!!
Waiouru, North Island, New Zealand
Two things exist in Waiouru. Sheep and soldiers. Get there early enough, and you can choose which one you can sleep with. Both are abundant, both are grateful.
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand
Bring a sweatshirt or jumper!
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand
Go visit Records Records above the Octagon (if it is still there)
Oamaru, South Island, New Zealand
Visit the Yellow eyed Penguins while in Oamaru.
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand
The weekend market is nice in Nelson.
Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand
The Antarctic centre is unique
Gisborne, North Island, New Zealand
Bring your surfboard
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand
Watch the whales, swim with the dolphins
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
go to waiheke island and visit the vineyards, its the best day out!
Thames, North Island, New Zealand
Thames is the Gateway to the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Check out the Kauranga Forest - great bush walks, fantastic swimming holes, swingbridges and more! If you are into Goldrush History then don't miss the Stamp Battery and take a trip down into a real goldmine!
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Auckland is just another big city. Get out as soon as possible and see New Zealand. Much can be seen even just a couple hours outside the city. Although, the south island is the place to be.
Okarito, South Island, New Zealand
Okarito is a must if you are travel along the west coast of the south island of New Zealand. Owning a car comes in handy here because no buses go there. The nearest bus stop is 30 minutes south in Franz Josef.Okarito is one street with just a few houses but has several excellent walks that give a great view of Mount Cook/Aoraki and the Southern Alps. The lagoon there is quite peaceful and surrounding by rain forest, but lots of sand flies so bring some repellent.
Otaki Beach, North Island, New Zealand
One of the many beaches along the brilliant Kapiti Coast, it is endowered with a number of particular attributes; a great restaurant/bar, a couple of really cool op-shops, not far from Otaki-proper and, of course, the lovely beach itself. Great for a decent 2-hour stroll, but also nice for a quiet dip or a sit.
Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand
The double decker bus trip is GREAT !! it visits the bunjy site(fantastic hot chocolate mufins) , a vineyard (great cheeses wine) and Arrowtown a beautiful old gold mining town (great chocolate even chilli chocolate yum) This is a fantstic trip even in the middle of winter but dress warm as those old busses are not heated.
Napier, North Island, New Zealand
sunny relaxed place with lots of good cafes around. bring sunnies! may see buskers around sometimes, which adds more to the relaxed feel =)
Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand
Visit Pantagonia for awesome chocolate and ice cream
Weymouth, North Island, New Zealand
There is a neat little Maori Cafe called Cafe Te Akau on Beihlers Road worth a trip just for that.
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Make sure to get a current map before traveling the area. Also, take note as New Zealanders drive on the left hand side. Taxi drivers tend to be just as lost as you are so do not depend too much on them. Finally, the roads are not marked consistently marked so always give yourself heaps of time to get to your destination as you are guaranteed to get lost.
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
A great day in Wellington would include....driving to Makara Beach west of the city......then take in the views at Mount Victoria.......drive around the bays to The Chocolate Fish Cafe....finish back downtown......stroll around the waterfront.....jump on an electric unit up to the Kapiti Coast......Wellington rocks!!!!!!!!!!!
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
If you go one place in Wellington, go to the musiem te papa. Even if they are not your normal thing, check it out. It will blow your mind
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand
We camp at Kaiteriteri every summer which is just under an hour away from Nelson and we love to take day trips there to visit the wineries, look at the many arts and crafts and have lunch at our fav restaurant Lambrettas.
Greymouth, South Island, New Zealand
Greymouth is the largest town on the west coast of New Zealand. If traveling south then you should definitely stock up on supplies here. Everything down the coast will be much more expensive. Don't stay in Greymouth too long. you might as well travel two hours south to stay in a glacier town. Franz Josef or Fox townships. Both glaciers are easily accessible and you can go there at night. How many times have you seen a glacier in a rain forest at night with the moonlight reflecting off the ice?
Tauranga, North Island, New Zealand
This city is not very interesting, however it is surrounded by interesting other places, go to one of these instead. Try Rotorua.
Papamoa, North Island, New Zealand
Careful of crabs and sharks during summer.
Pongakawa, North Island, New Zealand
Try some of the ice cream from the comvita store.
Mount Maunganui, North Island, New Zealand
Watch out for sting rays in pilot bay.
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
Wellington is a cool place if the weather's right. No matter what time of year come prepared for four seasons. Check out the City Gallery in Civic Sqaure, it's free, as is Te Papa, the national museum. There's the Fine Art's Gallery near Queen's Warf (donation), sometimes it's worth a visit. Cable Car is very popular with toursists (and no you won't crash). Cuba Street is supposedly vibe-ish. Check out the beaches, Oriental, Lyall Bay, Eastborne. But it's also nice to get out of the city as it's only a short drive in any direction to get a taste of rural scenery, Waikane is nice. Most people only go to Wellington to travel through to the South Island on the Picton Ferry but it's worth a short stop to have a look around. The nice thing about Wellington is the way most of the surrounding suberbs work into the landscape, old victorian-style houses dotted on the hills. But the best sight in Wellington is the Katherine Mansfield birthplace for the literary, cultural tourist. Have a read of some of her stories before you go, like 'Prelude', 'The Wind Blows,' 'At the Bay' (set in Eastbourne) to put the place and the house in perspective. Enjoy!!
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
Fot the best Malaysian in town, hit up Satay Kingdom in the left bank off Cuba street. Vege mee goreng to die for! And cheap too.
Russell, North Island, New Zealand
A nice little town. Take the ferry from Paihia, wander through the quiet streets and into a couple of art or antique stores, and then walk up Flagstaff Hill for a great view and a short history lesson.
Punakaiki, South Island, New Zealand
a very good backpacker in town is Te Nikau Retreat (BBH) which is in the middle of the rainforest. The sunset over the pancakerocks is beautiful. but be aware of the sandflys. there are a lot of walkingtracks and riverkayaking.
Taupo, North Island, New Zealand
Spend some time on the beach here. Lake Taupo is gorgeous, with it's black sand, black swans, and stunning view. Very relaxing. The town is very compact and there is also a nice youth hostel.
Coromandel, North Island, New Zealand
Famous for the warm water, beach, cathedral cove in hahei and hot water beach. The hot water beach is cramped on weekends and start of summerholidays.
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
Auckland is just another city. With all the beauty of New Zealand waiting for you, don't spend too much time here. A trip into the Bay of Islands to the north or any destination to the south will be much more rewarding than walking the streets of Auckland.
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand
A great place to stop for lunch or to swim with the dolphins. The shore is covered in round, flat rocks that make sun-bathing or walking difficult.
Nelson, South Island, New Zealand
Nelson is a great, laid-back city. Also a good place to start a trip into the Abel Tasman National Park. A shuttle bus will take you from the youth hostel to the trail head.
Taupo, North Island, New Zealand

Warkworth, North Island, New Zealand
Great fihing all around Kawau which can be accessed from many beaches within 10 minutes of Warkworth
Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand
An unexpected contender for best coffee on the planet: Mazagran, Good Oil, numerous others. Shame on those who stick with the Starbucks (yes, it's here). Beware cruise ship arrival days. All buses and boats are booked solid and Octagon cafes are overrun those days.
Auckland, North Island, New Zealand
check out the harbour. such a nice city, go to sky city.

Smells. But dont worry, you get used to it! Go to a Maori pa and eat corn on the cob cooked in the natural hot springs, yum!

There are 2 must dos for Hanmer Springs. 1 is go to the hot pools and 2 is hire a crocodile bike and ride around the town.

Masterton is a great little town. Wander down the main street and make sure you go to the park, its lovley. Play a round of mini golf then take a stroll through the rose gardens.
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand
Whale or dolphin watching a MUST!!
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
I grew up in Wellington and love it! Make a stroll along the waterfront a must. If you have an extra day go and visit Tepapa. For great shopping follow Lampton Quay, Willis St, Manners Mall and Cuba Streets. Definatly go and watch a film at the world famous Embassy Theatre, where the world premiere of the Return of the King was held.
New Plymouth, North Island, New Zealand
Go to the swimming pool. it has a huge wave pool!!
Hamilton, North Island, New Zealand
Go and feed the birdies at the park
Okiwi, North Island, New Zealand
Okiwi Camping Ground
The Okiwi Camping ground at Great Barrier is literally just over the fence from the Okiwi airfield, making it easy to get the camping gear to the campsite, so long as your pilot will drop you off at the northern end of the runway. The camp site is also right next to the estuary. After a long walk through the estuary, and a short swim across the channel in the estuary, you get to the dunes that separate the Surf Beach from the estuary. While I am not a ‘surfie’ myself, the beach is popular with surfers, and with good reason.
Balclutha, South Island, New Zealand
Literally transalted as mouth of the Clutha - that's really all there is to it. You might get a nice cup of coffee.
Bluff, South Island, New Zealand
The bottom of the South Island. On a clear day you can see the South pole from here. Just kidding. But it is where winter comes from. Go for a nice walk and get your photo taken with a very busy signpost.
Wellington, North Island, New Zealand
Wellington has so many hidden gems and if you want the best views head up to the top of Brooklyn by the wind turbine - just take a coat as it can get mighty chilly!
National Park, North Island, New Zealand
National Park is simply gorgeous and it is worth stopping and making the effort to walk to some of the waterfalls and viewing platforms around the area.
