The first European settlement in New Zealand located in the Bay of Islands. The puritan English hated it because it was full of whores, sailors, drugs and alcohol. The church with the bullet holes fired by the Maori when Hone Heke cut down the flag pole for the fourth time. Nowadays a quiet backwater for sport fishing boats and relaxation from the big smoke.

A nice little town. Take the ferry from Paihia, wander through the quiet streets and into a couple of art or antique stores, and then walk up Flagstaff Hill for a great view and a short history lesson.
