Not too many travelers make their way to Waitomo Caves when visiting New Zealand. Those that do usually go to see the Black Water Rafting. Otherwise travelers visiting the area generally stick to more well-known destinations such as Taupo and Tauranga. Travel Tips from people who've been to Waitomo Caves
These caves are reccommended as they are naturally formed.  Get used to darkness because, you will be able to see the natural beauty of the lime stone caves and the many glow worms that occupy the ceiling of the caves.  I reccommend that you wear shorts and a warm top, you will be entering some damp parts of the caves.  This may be difficult for elderly travellers.

For the adventurous type, black water rafting in the Waitomo Caves near Te Kuiti is a must! You're provided with a wetsuit and a rubber tube, and you float through the rivers in underwater caves in complete darkness, where you can see nothing but the glowwarms on the ceiling. Not for the faint of heart, but it's definitely an unforgettable experience!
