Travel Tips from people who've been to Dunedin
The best time of the year to visit Dunedin is January or February. In January it is warm and quiet, because the students are out of town. That means there is not a lot of people around, you can see all the attractions quietly (including the University Clock tower) without having to fight through the hordes of students. However if you want to have a bit more action, go in February. The students are all coming back in Feburary, Orientation Week starts at University and it is still warm. Any bars that are closed over the summer break will reopen and there will many events going on.

Pleasant South Island town, used to be quite important to the NZ economy but now its really just about the University, and there's not that much going on during Uni holidays. Sightseeing activities include the Cadburys factory (with real chocolate waterfall, Wonka-style :)) and Speight's brewery (amusing tour and booze at the end). Also found the only decent curry house I had the whole time I was in NZ (on George Street. There's quite a good Chinese across the road as well)

Spent new years 07/08 in Dunedin at Heather and Dave's place, and it was awesome! We did the Speights Brewery tour (then consumed 14 sample glasses of beer) and went to the Cadbury Factory too, both were good fun. I loved all the old buildings down there, and thought it was a really nice city. It felt like a much smaller city than Auckland (which was a good thing). Also tried running up Baldwin Street (worlds steepest road) but wasn't able to jog all the way up...
