The San Carlos border is like nothing I've ever seen before.  Welcome to the third world! Despite the lack of luxury and typical tourist charms, San Carlos has a warm soul.  My friend and I got stuck here for two days waiting for the ferry to Ometepe and actually enjoyed our stay here.  Be prepared for no electricty (i.e. - no shelter from the sweltering heat) and no running water.  This means you might have to take a bucket shower, but with a sense of humor it's a true adventure, and a blast.  The most $ hotel is the best place to stay, Hotel Lekko.  We didn't stay there, but if you need creature comforts this is the place that comes highly recommended.  BRING LOTS OF US DOLLARS or CORDOBAS; you'll need them and there is no ATM. 

The hotel Tia Irene is nice and clean, but can be a little expensive, comparatively. at $20/night, you will get air conditioning, a comfortable bed, usually hot water (its a little iffy), a television and breakfast in the morning.
A more reasonable room is at the hotel 'las palmas' which will give you either a bed or a semi-private room for about 70 cordobas (like 8 or 9 dollars), for a night, or rent by the hour!!
mini-castil and la mina have great meals, and there are usually baked goods, like bread, available on the street, but watch the fruit and stay away from the coconut. it cleans you out!!
