Travel Tips from people who've been to Managua & Surrounds
dont stay here to long, managua is a very built up modern city, it was rebuilt from scratch after the old city was destroyed, and it is nothing like the rest of the country. also keep your wits about you at all times people will try and scam some money out of you at any given oppertunity. Be V.careful with the taxi drivers, find out the cost BEFORE you set off, and double check it is in cords, not dollars. check it is for the whole taxi, not per person. and if you are getting the taxi to the bus station, make it very clear you want the bus station otherwise they may ask where you are going and try to drive you all the way there. Also, dont be on the streets after dark, its not safe, a friend of mine got stabbed in Managua, and some other friends got mugged.

With it's colourful, colonial houses, squares and churches it truly seems like you're "back in time". Granada is absolutely stunning! Take a walk, slowly, around the city and check it out. Take a boat tour along the Granada islets. Want nightlife? During weekends you won't get bored as there are enough bars to head to and also two clubs where many locals go to. Want to interact with locals? It's easy to do so around the square, the Calzada street or with the staff of your hotel or hostel. People are very friendly...obviously it's easier to interact with them if you speak Spanish! Just three days I think would be enough in this city, but it's charm might keep you  there for longer!

Las Isletas is an archipelago of 365 little volcanic islands (one for each day of the year) situated inside Cocibolca Lake, 3 Km. far from Granada city. All these islands are luxuriant, rich in fauna and flora, especially in water birds. You can visit islands by little ship's boats leaving from Acese port or Cabaña Amarilla port both situated in the South end of Malecón of Granada. By these boats you can run through narrow canals that divide islands and admire a fortification of XIX century, which is on San Pablo Island, and a monkey-colony living on a little isle: when the boat comes near the shore, monkeys arrive all excited! You can spend the night on one of the islands.
