Niger

Niger is a West African country covered largely by the Sahara, known as a major uranium producer. The capital of Niamey has an excellent Musee National that contains multiple display pavilions and a zoo. Niamey also has a market that is considered to be one of the best in West Africa. The town of Baleyara also contains an excellent market that attracts merchants and buyers from all around. Visit Zinder for traditional architecture and a fine old town. In Agadez, the old Grande Mosque towers above the surrounding buildings, and is a very well known attraction. From Agadez, you can access the Air Mountains and the Tenere Desert. In the Tenere is the town of Bilma, from which camel caravans make their way across the desert carrying salt. For animal sightings, you can see giraffe herds around the town of Koure and visit the large Parc National du “W” du Niger for game and predator viewing.

The National Zoo (at the National Museum) is a terrible display of cruelty to animals--they keep two tigers in a 20x20 cage. However, the artisan workshop makes wonderful souvenirs, and supports many Nigeriens who would be otherwise unable to practice their trades.

N'Guigmi is a little town in the east of the Republic of Niger. It is bustling as it is a a place that links between the Sahel zone and the Sahara desert. It is located on the shores of Lake Chad and a lot of fishing is done as one can see fishing boats. Well, was. The lake has retreated some 30 kilometers and no water in sight in N'Guimi anymore.

Tessaoua is a small town, one hours drive from Maradi, when you travel to Niamey. A pleasant little town with not much to see. But they have a local speciality which everybody buys: Kilichi. It is stripes, or in the form of pizza foundation, of air and sun dried beef meat "drowned" in a mixture of spices. Something very delicious to eat.
