Nigeria

Nigeria is a West African country that has a reputation for dictatorships and violence. Much of this reputation is formed by the city of Lagos, which is a city of staggering proportions. A teeming mass of humanity with unofficial population estimates at nearly 20 million, it is an energetic city that makes for an exhausting, but often rewarding experience. In Lagos, the National Museum contains an excellent array of Nigerian and African treasures. For a more relaxing experience, take a walk through the thousand-year-old city of Kano, which is the oldest in West Africa with several compelling museums. Yorubaland is located in the southwest of Nigeria and was once the centre of a powerful empire. You can find out more about this and other empires by visiting the National Museum in Ife, or the Alaafin’s Palace in Oyo. Similarly, you can visit the Oba’s Palace for the headquarters of a different empire in Benin City. To experience a different type of majesty, one can go to the Cross River National Park and see elephants, gorillas, and chimpanzees. Back to history, one can visit the old town quarters of Zaria and Kano.

In Jos, Nigeria there is a hospital called "Faith Alive". It was founded by Dr. Christian Isichei. He learned medicine in the states but wanted to use that to help his people in Nigeria. Poverty is so high there..

Aba, Nigeria
Extreamly friendly local people, very nice homemade food in the local tavernas, bars and pubs. You can hear Nigerian music almost everywhere. Nice club in the center build underground. Best way to see places is with a local person. Really big market place full of almost everything! You should have a good car to move around as the roads are a bit off and also for the safety on the highway. Aba City Clobal Hotel is quite nice for visiting or even staying in. Halabalaba bar with live music on stage and night club was absolutely the place to be! =)just fell in love with the people!

Benin-City, Southern Nigeria, Nigeria
Benin City is a place to rough it in Africa. No grand hotels or restaurants. Food is pure Nigerian, or southern Nigerian. Pounded yam, or fufu as they call it in Ghana, rice are the staples.

Kano, Northern Nigeria, Nigeria
Kano is a large city in northern Nigeria that I spent a few days in. There is history to this place as it is the oldest city in West Africa dating back over a 1000 years. One of the things to check out is the dye pits which are apparantly the oldest in Africa. They are still used by men dying cloth with indigo and selling it. There are still remains of the old town walls, I don't know their exact age. And there are a couple high flat hills that give a great panoramic view of the city.

Ibadan, Nigeria
Amidst the jungles of Ibadan lies the IITA (Int'l Institute of Tropical Agriculture)...a great place to chill over the weekend amidst a community run by scientist from all over the world. This place have their own airport and golf course aside from a gorgeous man made lake. It was my home away from home when I was based in Lagos.
