Nigeria is a West African country that has a reputation for dictatorships and violence. Much of this reputation is formed by the city of Lagos, which is a city of staggering proportions. A teeming mass of humanity with unofficial population estimates at nearly 20 million, it is an energetic city that makes for an exhausting, but often rewarding experience. In Lagos, the National Museum contains an excellent array of Nigerian and African treasures. For a more relaxing experience, take a walk through the thousand-year-old city of Kano, which is the oldest in West Africa with several compelling museums. Yorubaland is located in the southwest of Nigeria and was once the centre of a powerful empire. You can find out more about this and other empires by visiting the National Museum in Ife, or the Alaafin’s Palace in Oyo. Similarly, you can visit the Oba’s Palace for the headquarters of a different empire in Benin City. To experience a different type of majesty, one can go to the Cross River National Park and see elephants, gorillas, and chimpanzees. Back to history, one can visit the old town quarters of Zaria and Kano.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Nigeria
Extreamly friendly local people, very nice homemade food in the local tavernas, bars and pubs. You can hear Nigerian music almost everywhere. Nice club in the center build underground. Best way to see places is with a local person. Really big market place full of almost everything! You should have a good car to move around as the roads are a bit off and also for the safety on the highway. Aba City Clobal Hotel is quite nice for visiting or even staying in. Halabalaba bar with live music on stage and night club was absolutely the place to be! =)just fell in love with the people! Good tip? (+2) You like it or hate it. There is no in between. Good music if you know where to look. When Felerason Kuti was still alive they had the best music in Africa. His son has taken over the business. Good music, but the rebel is gone. Lagos is loud agressive and you need to be streetwise to survife and have a good time. They have an incredible public transport system that no foreigner can understand. It is based on thousands of small enterprices instead of a state run transport system. It works, although it looks like chaos. We used to go restaurant hopping. Every cource an other restaurant. We ate some wonderfull fresh grilled sole fish and even food ice cold beer. The Lagos Hilton Hotel is an experiance, since it is not a real HILTON hotel as we know them. They do however have some very cold beer and some very good hot and spicy suya (meat on scewers) and some real mean goatseye pepper soup ( the dogs down the steet love the goat eye when you throw it over the fence) I could never bring myself to eat the eye. You should try it, even if it is just for the fun. Atleast you have a story to tell your Grandchildren. Good tip? (0) Port Harcourt is the garden city of Nigeria. The hub oil activities in the Niger Delta which accounts for about 90% of the national revenue.Due to the international nature of the activities there, nationals and expatriates from all over the world live there. There are state of the art facilities for living and relaxation. There are cultural diversities of the locals because many ethnic groups are represented. There are a lot of tourists' attractions in and around the city stretching to the creek of the Atlantic Ocean.Generally, the people are friendly and hospitable but in some places the youths express their unhappy with the government and multinational oil companies because of deprivation and poverty in spite of the oil wealth which come from there. Good tip? (0)
