Lofoten are fabulous and storybook-like islands in the North Atlantic that offer stunning impressions, unique views and unforgettable travel experiences.

If you come to these islands you feel the original ambiance of ancient and traditional Norwegian life.

An awesome   landscape including high mountains, sharp rocks and green hills, little and narrow villages with those typical red wooden huts that are built on piles above the salty water and local codfish industry are just some of many interesting facets to discover.

Lofoten are the ideal spot to leave all the daily stress behind and dip into the pool of majestic surroundings combined with the friendliness of local fishermen and relaxing village life.

As a stranger you easily get the feeling of staying in a different but absolutely charming world. You’re able to drive along the coast and visit countless of neat villages that you can reach thanks to the modern Lofoten Road that also connects three of the main islands with each other.

Especially outdoor activities like cycling, mountaineering, rock climbing, fishing, watching sea birds and experiencing National Park atmosphere have priority among a lot of tourists, which means the islands are the perfect destination for every nature lover. Besides a trip to Lofoten is definitely a different worthwhile way of island hopping!

I totally recommend a short trip to this idyllic range and don’t forget to bring your camera because one fantastic view is followed by another astonishing silhouette!

This Travel Tip actually comes from a local, I grew up in Skjerstad which is not far from Bodø.

You come to the district of Salten (just above the arctic circle) if you are looking for :

* Fishing, hunting and camping outdoors.
* Experience the midnight sun (at the summer) or the total darkness in winter.
* See the Aurora Polaris (Northern Lights).
* Go skiing in the winter, in the summer
* See the worlds biggest whirlpool and maybe go diving.

An interesting thing about this (my :-) region is that you can wake up in a cabin by the sea in the morning, start walking and in one day be on the top of a mountain with a nice view from the top of the globe, drinking from a fresh spring and boiling soup in yet another cabin.
                                   (because)
Luckily the Norwegian Tourist Asociation have made it a whole lot easier by putting cabins everywhere for hire, you could check it out at : www.turistforeningen.no/

This here is my hometown of (nearly) 300 people.

This links to an infopage which unfortunately is not available in english at the moment :

http://www.skjerstad.info/

There is some information in this link :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skjerstad

If you bother to klick further you will find out that the biggest wiking boat ever made was built in the district of Salten and that the chief who owned it ... lived in Skjerstad.

Apart from that there is not much attractions, ofcourse the burial heaps in Ljønes from the wiking settlements, the church very nice and we also have a sculpture which is a part of the Artscape Nordland, for more information about what project that is you can follow this link : http://www.skulpturlandskap.no/Skulpturlandskap/artscape/

But what would make you whant to actually come to Skjerstad would be to camp, get to know locals and enjoy its unique location.
(http://www.flashearth.com , then write Skjerstad)
