Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, and known as the capital of west Norway. Many people know Bergen as the city of rain, or something along that note. The reason for this is the 7 mountains and long harbor that surround Bergen. This gives the city it’s unique scenery and charm. Supposable it rains 213 days out of the year, though it might just rain for 1 hour or less.
On “Gamlehaugen” you’ll find Christian Michelsen’s old home, which now is the royal family’s vacation home in Bergen. There’s many places in Bergen I would really recommend people to see, to mention a few; “Bergenhus, Bryggen, Fish marked, Fløyen and Ulriken”. From Fløyem and Ulriken you get a great view of the city, it’s also possible to hike over all 7 mountains, or just a few of them, which is a hike a highly recommend. If you hike the mountains you get a great view of the city and the mountain scenery, which is great.
Some basic history: Bergen was once the capital of Norway, then known as Bjørgvin. It has also been known as the Hanseatic city, and was at that time an important trading city, and traded a lot with the Hanseatic’/Germans. Bergen is German for mountain, and the beer label is Hansa. It was also in Bergen that a ship brought black death with it, which spread from Bergen to the rest of the country. Bergen has also been through quite a few big fires over the years. You will also find cultural aspects from the second world war her, like Bergenhus festning, etc.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Bergen
It is really nice to go up Mount Ulriken and hike around. Beautiful scenery and views.
Actually the whole of Bergen is very pleasant to walk around. Good tip? (+1) Bergen is one of the most beautiful Cities in Norway even though it is the most rainy city as well. Very famous is the fishmarket which is located in the heart of the City and the FLoibahn. The Fishmarket is opened daily from 9 - 18 hrs and you can find everything even Whale meat.
In some of the Hotels you can find Wireless Internet for free and in the near Cruise Terminal you can find all kind of Cruise Ships everyday. You can Change Money at the Money Exchange office or at the Bank but be careful: Banks are closed on Sundays.
Norway in General is quite expensive, you better visit Bergen in August and September because then you pay just half of the prices for nearly everything. Good tip? (0) this is an absolutely lovely town; perched on the edge of the water, & seeped w/ Viking history; everyone i met was extremely kind & incredibly well educated (had a 2.5hr conversation about world politics, music, art & the environment w/ two 18 year olds! find THAT in the US on a random corner!). Overall, i LOVED Bergen... but, check your timing, I was told that i was lucky to be there when it wasn't raining would also recommend a Kayak trip off the coast North of Bergen- easy to find an outfit to take you out, great, experienced guides for reasonable rates and unbeatable scenery Good tip?
