Travel Tips from people who've been to Masqat Region
Muscat (or Masqat or Mascate) is a particular site between modernity and tradition. A long main road crosses the city through white typical houses, running in parallel with the sea. The only way to move is by taxi or by car...no public services! Omanites are pleasant and kind. Men wear long white garments, while women dresses with black ones and covered head. However tourists are not obliged to wear the veil. It is a calm and rather sure place, also to visit by themselves but it's not a trendy place for nightlife! Don't miss forts, wonderful sunsets and pleasant excursions to the desert, the mountains and diving sports! The best period to go is between november and march. Since May to August you can experience more than 50°C degrees!!!

Matrah is a highly recommended destination for travellers to Oman.  There are many sights to see in this area; the Sultan's ship, old forts, jagged mountains, apartment facades built by the Portuguese, the corniche and Mutrah's old souq.  The old souq sells everything from traditional clothes, frankincense, myrrh and antique jewellery to cheap electronics and gold.  Although the shoppers are predominantly locals, the odd tourist can be seen and high-profile celebrities have been known to visit Mutrah souq while in Oman, such as Micheal Jackson and Kate Moss. Go to the souq early morning for slightly cheaper "morning" prices.  Remember to haggle the prices, and to dress conservatively.

I saw alot of travellers speaking loudly and slowly to the locals, but this really isn't necessary, many people in Oman speak very, very good English, particularly in the souq (the Matrah one is amazing!) Don't be surprised if you are invited to sit down in a shop and talk with the owner, who more than likely will off you some fruitjuice or soda. If you are asked, accept if possible, it can be one of the most memorable moments of your trip!
