Salalah, Zufar Region, Oman Oman is one of the best arb countrys i've been to,spent 3 years there, great beaches, great food and the people are fantastic and very friendly.Dont miss the fish market in Muscat, amazing!! Good tip? (+1) Jazirat Masirah, Ash Sharqiyah Coastal Region, Oman Don't visit here. I crashed my plane there which is the only reason I went. It is easily the freakisest place I have seen in the middle east and the people there were not thrilled with our being around. Plus the entire Island is nothing but dirt and mud huts. Good tip? (0) Muscat, Masqat Region, Oman If you like shopping, you have to go to the market in Ruwi! It's probably one of my fave places in the world. There are 123Rial shops everywhere there, with all sorts of things to buy, really cheap. The buzz there is cool too and the people are so friendly. Good tip? (0) Matrah, Masqat Region, Oman I saw alot of travellers speaking loudly and slowly to the locals, but this really isn't necessary, many people in Oman speak very, very good English, particularly in the souq (the Matrah one is amazing!) Don't be surprised if you are invited to sit down in a shop and talk with the owner, who more than likely will off you some fruitjuice or soda. If you are asked, accept if possible, it can be one of the most memorable moments of your trip! Good tip? (0) Muscat, Masqat Region, Oman Beautiful country. Hard working, down to earth people. The south is very green, even cold. Rent a 4x4 and enjoy a ride in the dessert. Bustan Palace is the place. Good tip? Good tip? (+1) Matrah, Masqat Region, Oman Matrah is a highly recommended destination for travellers to Oman. There are many sights to see in this area; the Sultan's ship, old forts, jagged mountains, apartment facades built by the Portuguese, the corniche and Mutrah's old souq. The old souq sells everything from traditional clothes, frankincense, myrrh and antique jewellery to cheap electronics and gold. Although the shoppers are predominantly locals, the odd tourist can be seen and high-profile celebrities have been known to visit Mutrah souq while in Oman, such as Micheal Jackson and Kate Moss. Go to the souq early morning for slightly cheaper "morning" prices. Remember to haggle the prices, and to dress conservatively. Good tip? (0) Muscat, Masqat Region, Oman Muscat (or Masqat or Mascate) is a particular site between modernity and tradition. A long main road crosses the city through white typical houses, running in parallel with the sea. The only way to move is by taxi or by car...no public services! Omanites are pleasant and kind. Men wear long white garments, while women dresses with black ones and covered head. However tourists are not obliged to wear the veil. It is a calm and rather sure place, also to visit by themselves but it's not a trendy place for nightlife! Don't miss forts, wonderful sunsets and pleasant excursions to the desert, the mountains and diving sports! The best period to go is between november and march. Since May to August you can experience more than 50°C degrees!!! Good tip? (0) Muscat, Masqat Region, Oman - go the the sukh/fish market (early in the moring)!
- buy sandlewood and frankincense at the bazaar (only in the evening)
- have a look at the Sultans's palace or go dirt biking in between (do not forget the camelback!).
Having said the latter - the old fortresses are more interesintg Good tip? (0) Dib Dibba, Musandam Peninsula, Oman The harbour we leave from when going diving in the Musandam area. It is small fishing port, full of local dhows used for fishing and excursions. There are always local arrangments to be made to hire a boat. But please do not forget a passport with valid visa, as you have to cross the Omani border to go to Musandam. Police very often checks. The travel distance from Dubai is about an hour and a half, easy driving. Good tip? (+1) Salalah, Zufar Region, Oman Salalah is great go to the lost city of Ubar...Though it's a long drive and there is nothing there it beats sitting in your hotel... Oh and ask the hotel where the Oasis bar is....bowling and paintball??? Strange but true Good tip? (0) Jazirat Masirah, Ash Sharqiyah Coastal Region, Oman Don't visit here.
