Panama

Most famous for the Panama Canal, which spans 80km to connect the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic, this southernmost Central American country has much to offer in terms of unspoiled and accessible tropical rainforests and wildlife, beautiful mountains, historical sites, numerous islands and more. The capital, Panama City, is located only 10 minutes away from a tropical rainforest, within which the diversity in wildlife rivals the deepest parts of the Amazon. Traverse through narrow river passageways and mangrove swamps to visit the Embera Indian Village situated deep in the jungles. For those looking for a classical Caribbean experience, Bocas Del Toro is an archipelago with palm fringed beaches, idyllic beach scenery and amazing snorkeling and scuba diving. Nearby, at the Bastimentos Marine Park, come face to face with Night Monkeys and Three-toed sloths. In the lagoon nearby, observe slider turtles and spectacled caymans. For those who are interested in research and discovery, tour Barro Colorado, where a living laboratory is run by the Smithsonian Institute for Tropical Research. Nearby, Monkey Island gives you a chance to interact with four different types of monkeys. To learn more about Panama’s history, the old Fortress at Portobelo is a must see. Founded in 1597, it was once the third strongest fortress in Spanish America and is considered a world heritage site. Old Panama, the first Spanish city founded in 1519, was another important location in the colonial trade era. It fell into disuse after the city was attacked by pirates. The Royal Castle of San Lorenzo of Chagre is another worthwhile stop. Built as a defense site, it is also designated a world heritage site. Those wanting to do shopping will want to visit Colon, one of the largest free-trade zones and a popular cruise port. From nightlife to nature, adrenaline rushes to relaxation, modern cultural experiences to traditional glimpses of various tribes and cultures, Panama is a country to experience it all.

The most beautiful beach in the area! Only reached by boat, the reason it's still so unspoiled. Snorkeling here is awsome, loads of coloured fish and coral, and on the island just palm trees, sand and birds!

You can (should?) experience a canal transit:
A partial canal transit tour operates three times a month, every Saturdays, except for the day when it operates as a full transit. We took the full transit tour and enjoyed it very much. After all the partial tour tourists leave (after 4 hours), there is a peacefull ride over the lake and a more impressive transit downwards to Colon (total 8 hours).

We bought our flight tickets to Bogota and then to Quito from Avianca. Then included a trip to Cartagena and did not have to pay 1 cent more!!!
For a Panama-Cartagena-Bogota-Quito tickets we paid only 353 USD!!! Try variations, you will be surprised!
