Darien Province Travel Guide

It's an Embera Indian village in Darien jungle, popular tourist destination, but do NOT go there with a day tour. The Embera put on a show for tourists which has nothing to do with their everyday life. Go there on your own (it's possible to get a boat fr La Palma, ask around at Baiquiru Bagara hotel). You stay in guest hut in the middle of the village, where you should keep your stuff in hammocks or it will be full of cockroaches, eat local food, can see the everyday life of the village around you, can go for a trip in jungle with local guide. You will be policed around by tourism coordinator attached to you, so you got to choose the right moment to escape and go around the village or down the river by yourself (he will find you in an hour or so anyway). You need basic Spanish; there is a phone booth but no ATM (of course). The place is generally safe, when using common caution.
