Mendi, PNG, is the provincial capital of the Southern Highlands Province,  and is also the name of one of the seven districts of that province.  The true highland experience.  Went to a non-tourist sing-sing, saw arse-grass, wondered at the mendi widows, saw women breastfeeding pigs(!) and was welcome into huts.  Beware canabalism is still happening.  one hotel. keep safe, esp at night.

Tucked away in the highlands of PNG, Mt Hagen is basically your normal Pacific Island town.  Yeah, it has shops, but the roads are still not paved.  Lots of chewed up blood red betelnut spat out on the streets.  Great fresh food markets.
