Considered “an island surrounded by all sides on land,” Paraguay has traditionally been one of the most isolated South American countries. Long considered one of the most corrupt countries, things are gradually improving. Asuncion, the country’s capital is filled with colonial style architecture. Nearby, you can follow the “golden circuit”, a tour of the producers of gold, silver and ñanduti, a type of lace cloth. Along the way, stop at the basilica of Caacupé, the site of an annual pilgrimage during the major religious festival to honour Our Lady of the Miracles. While here, consider following the Jesuit Trail, constructed in 1606 by Jesuit missions that tried to bring indigenous people to Christianity. Starting at thee city of Encarnación a number of major Jesuit ruins can be found. The Jesuit Ruins of Trinidad, 6 miles away, are considered one of the most beautiful and best preserved, with many of the original walls and many examples of stone carvings. The super-adventurous can consider heading to Gran Chaco, considered “the last South American frontier”, a vast semi-arid region with little known tribes. As it is a largely un-patrolled area, it can be dangerous. Finally, the Itaipú Dam, located on the border of Brazil, is the largest hydro-electric dam of its kind in the world. While not a typical tourist destination, Paraguay is an unlikely, but compelling destination.

Not worth while going their on it's one, as a part of a south american journey for 2 days ok. Bit sleepy old town, in the summertime gets extremely hot (around 40 plus during the daytime) avoid plane travels from uruguay or brasil, travel overland from montevideo, and also leave overland towards argentina (it will save you around 5-600 usd on plane ticks, and the bus journey is ok,- according to south american standards) there is a small town close to the uruguayan border, much more nightlife, discos whatsoever (u can't miss it no other town before or after till you hit asuncion.) When arriving seek up accomodation from lonely planet, and avoid the cheepest ratholes, 20 usd will buy you a nice room anyways, w realiable aircon. don't arrive on a sunday, - infact don't be in the city on a Sunday at all, nothing is open, it's like a cemeterey. If you are up for nature take a river ride towards the great plain, - but if it comes to rivers in SA, I would recommend to do it elswhere.

Best Street Snack: Freshly Popped Popcorn There is an amazing restaurant in the main square. I forget the name but it is in the Lonely Planet guidebook, and somehow I remember it starting with a Z (could be way off) Also, it is where you base yourself to go to the ruins of Trinidad (amazing!!!) and Jesus (no continuing busses on Sundays to Jesus, thus we missed that one.) We arrived in town quite late and it was raining, but nevertheless walked further away from the bus station to get cheaper accomodation for the evening. (The ones near the station were quite a bit pricier than we had expected.)
