Pitcairn Islands

Pitcairn actually represents a group of four islands – Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno, of which only Pitcairn, the second largest, is inhabited. Best known for hosting the descendants of mutinous sailors aboard The Bounty and their Polynesian consorts, all but a few of its 47 inhabitants are descended directly from the mutineers. Transportation to Pitcairn is for the determined, and your best bet is a multi-day boat ride from Mangareva, though some cruise lines may stopover at Pitcairn. Interesting sites include Bounty Bay, the final resting place of The Bounty (burned to conceal the evidence of inhabitants). Adamstown, contains the island’s only church safeguarding Fletcher Christian’s Bounty Bible. Garnet’s Ridge offers views of Tedside and Adamstown.  The Highest Point, and Down Rope contain ancient Polynesian petroglypths. Prepare to stay a while if you decide to come as getting off requires waiting till the next ship comes (not so often), and rough waters makes it sometimes impossible to embark and debark.
