Malopolska Region What to Expect
Oswiecim, Malopolska Region, Poland Oswecim is the original Polish name for the infamous site, Auschwitz/Birkenau, but it is a must see if you are visiting Poland or anywhere else in central Europe. I started with a tour that began in Auschwitz and ended in Birkenau and it was chilling. It was November 2006, but Poland was unusually warm for that time of year. I nearly lost it when I saw the children's clothes and the hair laid out as "fabric", but what was more haunting was walking into one of the women's barracks in Birkenau. It felt like it was perhaps 60* F outside, but as soon as I set foot inside the cabin, it was like walking into a freezer. You could almost feel the eyes of those poor souls on you. The smell of Birkenau was also a little eerie. Overall, if you are interested at all in seeing what evils people are capable of and more importantly how to prevent history repeating itself, put some time aside for visiting these concentration camps. Good tip? (0) Oswiecim, Malopolska Region, Poland As one enters Auschwitz one of the first thoughts, strangely, is that one should turn vegetarian... indeed Auschwitz feels like a systematic abattoir... the idea that it was one meant for men, women and children is a sobering thought with no comparison ... when you see the masses of hair, glasses, shoes, clothes and bags of victims behind glass panes, or when you see the point at which they were hoarded off trains into gas chambers, when you see the oven in which bodies were burnt and ashes disposed in a pond, or when you see the various ingenious ways of torture, execution and imprisonment ... there is little left to think ... you may perhaps shed a tear and walk around in shock, or you may click photos and view things with historical interest... but most visitors, as they walk this most famous (infamous) of the Nazi camps, for the most part remain strangely silent ... Good tip? (0) Oswiecim, Malopolska Region, Poland There are trains from Krakow to Auschwitz, for a small price. The locals usually don't speak English, but you can find signs. There are organized tours for Auschwitz I and Birkenau, in most languages, for a tax. You can also find books in English. the experience is overwhelming for most visitors which usually don't feel too well - nausea, trembling, headaches are common. A not so nice place to see. Don't bring children. Good tip? You have to go to Wawel (pronounced Vavel) Castle. Some say this is the heart of Poland and it is the past seat of Polish Kings. There is also a Smok (Dragon) that lives in the tunnel underneath the castle.
Two day trips you have to make are
1. Oswiencim (Aushwitz). You can take a train from the center of Krakow, to within a couple of hundred meters of the front gates. You cannot miss this testament to the horrors of the Nazis and genocide.
2. Wielizcka salt mines. This is another trip possible by the efficient Polish railway system. These salt mines have been in service for hundreds of years and are now a Unesco world heritage site. As the miners took the salt out they carved statues and even a cathedral into the caves. Really amazing.
Don't forget to listen to the trumpter in the main square and to have a great time. Krakow is fantastic! Good tip?
