Portugal was once one of the leading seafaring nations in the world with an empire that stretched across the world. Today it is a small and charming country with excellent beaches, many historical sites and an attractive landscape covered with vineyards and olive groves.

The capital of Lisbon is set among seven low hills next to a river. It is graceful and laid back, and contains sights such as the Torre de Belem harbour tower, the extravagant 16th century Igreja da Sao Roque church, its historic Alfama district and a number of excellent museums (such as the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian

The Algarve
is a very popular region with beach-goers.  It offers a superb set of beaches, an excellent climate and many water activities. The city of Lagos is one of the most popular resorts in the area and is an excellent base. The Douro Valley is another popular region with its steep terrace hillsides covered by port-wine vineyards and the occasional white manor house.

Other areas of Portugal have much to recommend as well. The walled city of Evora is noted for its excellent churches, including the church of Sao Francisco, which is lined with multitudes of human bones. Charming Sintra is known for its two major royal palaces (including the extravagant Pena Palace), while walled Obidos is quite picturesque. A sprawling set of Roman ruins can be found at Conimbriga. An entire Roman city can be found there, complete with villas, shops and theatres.

Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and cool summers freshened by a breeze blowing in from the Atlantic, Costa de Lisboa, on the southwestern coast, offers a rich and impressively integrated diversity. The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisboa. Since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755, the area still retains much of its original layout. Adjacent to the Alfama are the likewise old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria, on the western and northern slopes of the hill that is crowned by St. George's Castle. Every year in June, the streets of all three quarters come alive with the feasts in honour of the popular saints. The Graça quarter and the churches of São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia are within walking distance of this area. Radiant skies brighten the monumental city, with its typical tile covered building façades and narrow Medieval streets, where one can hear the fado being played and sung at night. But Lisbon is also the stage for popular festivities, the place for exquisite shopping, exciting nightlife, and interesting museums, a place from where motorways branch off in different directions.

Wicker Toboggan Sled Ride

The coolest thing ever! Definitely the most fun you will have in Funchal! You go up hill by cable car and up there, they offer you to go down (not the whole way though - about half-way) on a sled through the streets. It's a wooden sled with NO WHEELS! Two "drivers" will basically push you in the sled downhill, and when it has caught enough speed, they will hop on behind you. You can put 2 or 3 people sitting comfortably. A little pricey (I believe 15-10 euros per person), but definitely worth it. It goes very very fast, walking down it would take you approximately 40 minutes, and the whole thing lasts about 3. Very exhilarating!
When you are done, they will offer you a picture for 10 euros, but you don't have to take it. Neither the taxis to take you the rest of the way down - right by the end of the sled they are quite pricey and right there is a bus stop with buses for 1 euro which take you down to downtown.
