Travel Tips from people who've been to Central Portugal Region

Lovely little town with the defensive walls still standing. You can climb these walls for a great few over the surrounding area, walk the streets bordered by whitewashed houses, buy an icecream in one of the little shops when it gets to hot.

The town is accesible by bus from Castelo de Vide and Portalegre but there is limited service in the weekends. Best to go by car or if you want to walk, there is a medieval trail leading from the bottom of the hill to one of the entrance gates. Very rewarding walk, best to go in the morning because it can get really hot there during summertime. We were there with one of the locals showing us the way, maybe the tourist office of Castelo de Vide can help you on your way.

Also the town is lit up in the night if your standing in the valley the view is just breathtaking.

Evora Monte makes for the perfect stopover between Evora and Estremoz. This place is best visited by your own transport otherwhise there are a few busses leaving you at the bottom of the hill in the modern part of the village.

You could see the whole village including castle, well tower, in less than 2 hours. You can walk on the defensive walls, further on there is church and some cisterns. The view from both these walls and the castle are just amasing, with good weather you can see both Evora and Estremoz. There is a tourist office just a few steps away from the castle but it was closed when I was there even though the timetable showed it should have been open.

Very lovely town known for its whitewashed houses, flowers and small streets. Perfect day trip place although it is not really near any big tourist place, Merida in Spain is the closest I can think of. If you can stay the night so you can mingle with the locals. Not much of a nightlife, there was one bar near the big square that was kind of young. Good harty Alentejan food here. Visit the castle and look for the 16th-century Fonte da Vila, tucked away in the maze of cobbled streets.
