Campo Maior is situated in the Alentejo district of Portalegre. It is a small white town near to the Spanish border Badajoz and near Elvas. It belongs to the defence line of Elvas,Campo Maior,Ouguela,(excisting for 700 years) This border is famous for the Pennisula Wars. The town was destroyed by a explosion of ammunition in 1732 and a big part rebuilt after this. The capela dos ossos is made in honour of the people who died during this explosion. It has restaurants were you can taste the Alentejo kitchen, Bars. Nice citypark with terraces and everything else you can which for as a tourist.
