pasteis de belem

The 'pasteis the natas' are very popular all over Portugal but it is generally believed that the best ones are to be found in Belem where one pastelaria serves you their version sprinkeled with sugar and cinnamon. People line up to taste these little tarts.

I personally didn't think much of them but if you're in Belem you have to go and try them.

People in Lisboa
Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal
I, being a spanish speaker, assumed that all Lisbon citizens would know the language. This is the case for older folks, whom I was able to communicate with speaking spanish and they speaking back to me in Portuguese. However, most young people speak English very well and not very fond of Spaniards. I started using it more sparingly in Lisbon....In any case, Lisbon men are far less aggressive at the night/club scene than men in many Spanish cities, which was refreshing...

If you go there be forwarned, it is this city of seven hills. You will be either walking uphill or down hill. The sangria is much sweeter than you find in Spain, but nice. There is an old elevator in the city that was designed by Gustaf Eiffel (who also designed the Eiffel Tower in paris). The people of lisbon are very friendly and accomodating. The food is good and there is a lot to see. I went this past summer and it was scortching hot.

since a LOT of people ask in the internet about connection between Lisboa and Malaga or Sewilla I am happy to write: There is a bus you can take from Sete Rios bus station (metro stop Jardim Zoologico) to Malaga (one per day) or to Sewilla (11:40 and one more in the evening, costs ~40 euros )

Lisboa is a lovely city with plenty of cultural and historical sites. The must see are the castle of Belem just on the bank of river Tejo (Tagus), the monastery of st. Hieronymus and the monument of Prince Henry the navigator. Also the worl expo site is worth visiting. Lisboa has plenty of rather economical hotels/hostels and of course top 5 star luxury hotels. To dine outside can as well be cheap or expensive - depending where you decice to eat. I highly recommend a visit to Bairro Alto and may of it´s restaurants, where you can eat simple but tasty Portuguese food. And meanwhile listen to melancholic fado singing. In the summer one should try fresh, grilled sardines with a fresh glass of vinho verde - green wine . Going around in Lisbon is rather easy and cheap. You can take a tram and have sight seeing tour. Or if in a hurry, also taxis are quite cheap. The starting fee is a little less than 2 euros.

Lisboa Arts & Recreation

Lisbon nightlife will surprise u as it did with me. Start with little tour @ Bairro Alto, full of small bars with djs playing, just to heat up the night or try as shots as u can @ minuscle MEZCAL BAR (never try Dragonball or TGV ) F u look 4 some serious dance, best club in town and in Portugal is LUX FRAGIL: an old warehouse situated in in the Santa Apolonia docks near Tago river; 2 floors with best world dj's, amazing fornitures (especially giant sofa and black 8-ball ) and fantastic roof view opened in summer. Behave good @ the entrance and u ll see paradise. Other nice places are KREMLIN and KAPITAL clubs near Avenida 24 do julho: these 2 clubs are side by side, try Kremlin f u want heavy techno inside little gothic churc ( I swear ) or Kapital f u look 4 more elegant place without sacrifying music. F u r not tired yet go to Bar EUROPA in Cais do Sodre ( from 6 am to 12 ). Prices r not that high comapred to places u'll dance so dnt worry bout that. Anyway Lisbon is full of any kind of music, these are simply my fav 1 sure u'll find yours!

If your thing is interacting with locals than you have to visit Lisbon in June. The Lisboetas (the inhabitants of Lisbon) like parties, traditions and sardines and what better time is there to take advantage of all this than in June? Because June is the month of the festas dos Santos Populares (Feast Days of the Popular Saints). In the evening of 12th June, pots of basil, colourful paper carnations and casks of wine are everywhere. There’s a definite whiff of grilled sardines on street corners and Lisbon becomes one big street party. There are parades in each district and everywhere there is music and dancing. In the evening, make your way up to the Alfama, where sardines are grilled outside the houses and the narrow streets fill with people in a party mood. There is a big parade on the night of the 12 June for St Antonio which makes its way along the Avenida da Liberdade. The old quarters of Alfama and Mouraria are particularly busy and celebrations continue until dawn On St Peter's Day there's a boat procession on the Tagus (the river which runs through Lisbon) near Montijo, which is situated on the opposite side of the river from the capital, dating back to the Middle Ages.

Visiting Alfama, the old town is a must. It has beautiful traditional architecture, prepare to walk a lot. This is also the place to buy fresh fish and find a place to listen to the fados.

The Lisbon Aquarium is worth seeing, the main fish tank is HUGE. It is a nice way to relax after shopping or interesting enough to plan a day trip to. There are also pieces of environmental art around, so the walk from train station/ shopping center isn't boring either.

Food in Lisboa
Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal
Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and cool summers freshened by a breeze blowing in from the Atlantic, Costa de Lisboa, on the southwestern coast, offers a rich and impressively integrated diversity. The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisboa. Since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755, the area still retains much of its original layout. Adjacent to the Alfama are the likewise old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria, on the western and northern slopes of the hill that is crowned by St. George's Castle. Every year in June, the streets of all three quarters come alive with the feasts in honour of the popular saints. The Graça quarter and the churches of São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia are within walking distance of this area. Radiant skies brighten the monumental city, with its typical tile covered building façades and narrow Medieval streets, where one can hear the fado being played and sung at night. But Lisbon is also the stage for popular festivities, the place for exquisite shopping , exciting nightlife , and interesting museums , a place from where motorways branch off in different directions.

Make sure you visit the Estufa Fria, lovely tropical greenhouses in Parque Eduardo VII. If you are around on a weekend, make sure you venture into Bairro Alto for a drink in the steep cobbled streets that are lined with bars, and look out for the wandering vegie-burger seller on Rua Da Rosa, for a better after-drink meal than a kebab! Wander around Alfama, for pictures of beautiful traditional houses with laundry hanging off the balconies.

Smells very fishy, but the seafood tastes really good. Sardines on toast are the staple food.
