Travel Tips from people who've been to Northern Portgual Region
Check out the botanic gardens, there are just lovely! Go to a port winery for a tour and sample some vintage! Have your camera ready when going over one of the bridges crossing the river, for some great snaps. Good tip? (+1) Porto is not like any other city in Portugal due to it's english occupants back in the days which didn't just affect it's architecture!! Once there make sure to make a trip along the riverside and taste as much wine as possible! If your travel arrangements fit make a cruise along the river Ouro(gold river where the great Porto wine is produced!!!) Try to make it during the big festivities in the end of June you won't regret it!!! The weather is almost always wet! Pack and umbrella and an overcoat! Try the sardinhas and eet it the Portuguese way the know better! At night you will find great clubs along the river side that stay all night long!!! If you like bridges that's the place to go! Youth hostels are ok but try the small pansion better! You can reach Porto through plane, car, train, bus or boat! The plane maybe faster but once you are in Portugal avoid the plane! TAP Portugal airline is expensive, always late and you will probably lose your things( talking from expierense) the train is good (if you are heading to Porto from Lisbon try the bus it's moreeeeeeeee comfortable) Good tip? (0) Guimaraes was the first capital of Portugal, and it is also called "the Place of Birth of the Portuguese Nation". The reason for this is that it was the hometown of the first king of Portugal, Don Afonso Henriques, and many important events that led to the independence of our country happened in Guimaraes. The town is a great place to visit. It has an historical centre with many old houses and monuments. With its historical center declared recently a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Guimarães adds this mark of honour to another title it displays by right, that of birthplace of the nation. Its proud and dominating castle was where Portugal´s first king, Afonso Henriques, was born in the 12th century. you can see it all n one day and then explore the rest of the region Minho. Good tip?
