Portugal People & CultureBike tours is a recent concept which offers great thrills to all participants. It consists on descending along a particular route in an "Environmental Friendly" vehicle, making several stops to rest and enjoy the fantastic views that only Madeira Island offers . In this adventure you can feel different emotions, once riding a bicycle in Madeira gives you a feeling of freedom, and, for a moment, you come to think that there is only you, your bicycle and nature. Madeira Island is considered one of the best places to do canyoning in Europe, it is searched by different practitioners of this modality. It is an activity that takes place on a stretch of water (creek) and to overcome the natural challenges you will have to walk, jump and swim in beautiful lagoons, and carry rappels into waterfalls. This is an activity that guarantees strong emotions and unforgettable moments close to nature, where you will discover what few people know.Come with Adventure Kingdom and discover this activity in a safe way, always accompanied by a professional who will provide you with the needed security equipment. The Jeep Safari has been asserting itself as a product, increasingly sought by those who like adventure and meeting places that would otherwise be impossible to achieve. It is an activity that offers unique emotions, unforgettable moments and the opportunity to visit faraway places, which can only be seen in the mountains of Madeira Island. (0) Setubal, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Have a grilled flat fish at one of the beaches little restaurants and finish your dinner with a coffee (the best coffee in the world is in Portugal) Good tip? (0) Carvoeiro, The Algrave Region, Portugal Carvoeiro is fantastic...
Lovely weather, nice beaches and good meals. Most of the resaturants are very reasonable. The lil Italian restaurant on the hill was my favourite.
Night life is quiet ish!!! Sullys bar and the Round up bar were great craic. The locals are nice but can be a lil cross at times.
Shopping is very cheap, especially Decathalon if you want some sport gear. Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal I, being a spanish speaker, assumed that all Lisbon citizens would know the language. This is the case for older folks, whom I was able to communicate with speaking spanish and they speaking back to me in Portuguese. However, most young people speak English very well and not very fond of Spaniards. I started using it more sparingly in Lisbon....In any case, Lisbon men are far less aggressive at the night/club scene than men in many Spanish cities, which was refreshing... Good tip? (+1) Funchal, Madeira Region, Portugal Wicker Toboggan Sled Ride The coolest thing ever! Definitely the most fun you will have in Funchal! You go up hill by cable car and up there, they offer you to go down (not the whole way though - about half-way) on a sled through the streets. It's a wooden sled with NO WHEELS! Two "drivers" will basically push you in the sled downhill, and when it has caught enough speed, they will hop on behind you. You can put 2 or 3 people sitting comfortably. A little pricey (I believe 15-10 euros per person), but definitely worth it. It goes very very fast, walking down it would take you approximately 40 minutes, and the whole thing lasts about 3. Very exhilarating! When you are done, they will offer you a picture for 10 euros, but you don't have to take it. Neither the taxis to take you the rest of the way down - right by the end of the sled they are quite pricey and right there is a bus stop with buses for 1 euro which take you down to downtown. Good tip? (+1) Fatima, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal The people crawling on their knees towards the chapel of the holy virgin! Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal If you go there be forwarned, it is this city of seven hills. You will be either walking uphill or down hill. The sangria is much sweeter than you find in Spain, but nice. There is an old elevator in the city that was designed by Gustaf Eiffel (who also designed the Eiffel Tower in paris). The people of lisbon are very friendly and accomodating. The food is good and there is a lot to see. I went this past summer and it was scortching hot. Good tip? (0) Fatima, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal visit the central square at night, it is a really special feeling when it's dark and without people around. Good tip? (0) Lagos, Azores Region, Portugal Small Island with Lots of culture and beautiful Ocean views. Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Visit absolutely Belem, very nice cultural place Good tip? (0) Miranda do Douro, Northern Portgual Region, Portugal There's not much to see in Miranda, the best thing to do is to try to find some traces of mirandes language and culture, it's quite different from Portuguese Good tip? (0) Porto, Northern Portgual Region, Portugal Porto is Portugal's 2nd largest city with bags of cultural activities and wonderful architecture. it's in the north (green coast) and hence is a little colder in the winter than say Algarve, BUT what it lacks in sunshine it more than makes up for restaurants bars and is very close to the only nature park in portugal. A more relaxing and off the beaten track location where tourists aren't the only thing in town. Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Lisboa is a lovely city with plenty of cultural and historical sites. The must see are the castle of Belem just on the bank of river Tejo (Tagus), the monastery of st. Hieronymus and the monument of Prince Henry the navigator. Also the worl expo site is worth visiting.
Lisboa has plenty of rather economical hotels/hostels and of course top 5 star luxury hotels. To dine outside can as well be cheap or expensive - depending where you decice to eat. I highly recommend a visit to Bairro Alto and may of it´s restaurants, where you can eat simple but tasty Portuguese food. And meanwhile listen to melancholic fado singing. In the summer one should try fresh, grilled sardines with a fresh glass of vinho verde - green wine .
Going around in Lisbon is rather easy and cheap. You can take a tram and have sight seeing tour. Or if in a hurry, also taxis are quite cheap. The starting fee is a little less than 2 euros. Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Lisbon nightlife will surprise u as it did with me. Start with little tour @ Bairro Alto, full of small bars with djs playing, just to heat up the night or try as shots as u can @ minuscle MEZCAL BAR (never try Dragonball or TGV ) F u look 4 some serious dance, best club in town and in Portugal is LUX FRAGIL: an old warehouse situated in in the Santa Apolonia docks near Tago river; 2 floors with best world dj's, amazing fornitures (especially giant sofa and black 8-ball ) and fantastic roof view opened in summer. Behave good @ the entrance and u ll see paradise. Other nice places are KREMLIN and KAPITAL clubs near Avenida 24 do julho: these 2 clubs are side by side, try Kremlin f u want heavy techno inside little gothic churc ( I swear ) or Kapital f u look 4 more elegant place without sacrifying music. F u r not tired yet go to Bar EUROPA in Cais do Sodre ( from 6 am to 12 ). Prices r not that high comapred to places u'll dance so dnt worry bout that. Anyway Lisbon is full of any kind of music, these are simply my fav 1 sure u'll find yours! Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Go ans lissen to the Fado music! Its great! Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Big Partys in the sud Portugal like BOOM Festival 2 weks electro music non stop:)... Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Going into the old city little charming streets and find the original 'FADO' bars, where people just stand up and sing.. without any other words.. quite small ambient, but really charming and full of old athmosphere.. good music, make by the real voice of the people in the place! Good tip? (0) Abutreira, The Algrave Region, Portugal Perfect beaches, cheap hostels, nice potuguese people and beautiful portuguese language and music. Good tip? (0) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Boasting springtime temperatures during the winter and cool summers freshened by a breeze blowing in from the Atlantic, Costa de Lisboa, on the southwestern coast, offers a rich and impressively integrated diversity. The capital of Portugal since its conquest from the Moors in 1147, Lisbon is a legendary city with over 20 centuries of History. The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisboa. Since it largely survived the earthquake of 1755, the area still retains much of its original layout. Adjacent to the Alfama are the likewise old quarters of Castelo and Mouraria, on the western and northern slopes of the hill that is crowned by St. George's Castle. Every year in June, the streets of all three quarters come alive with the feasts in honour of the popular saints. The Graça quarter and the churches of São Vicente de Fora and Santa Engrácia are within walking distance of this area. Radiant skies brighten the monumental city, with its typical tile covered building façades and narrow Medieval streets, where one can hear the fado being played and sung at night. But Lisbon is also the stage for popular festivities, the place for exquisite shopping , exciting nightlife , and interesting museums , a place from where motorways branch off in different directions. Good tip? (+1) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal I, being a spanish speaker, assumed that all Lisbon citizens would know the language.
Good tip? (+1) Lisboa, Lisbon & Surrounds Region, Portugal Make sure you visit the Estufa Fria, lovely tropical greenhouses in Parque Eduardo VII.
If you are around on a weekend, make sure you venture into Bairro Alto for a drink in the steep cobbled streets that are lined with bars, and look out for the wandering vegie-burger seller on Rua Da Rosa, for a better after-drink meal than a kebab!
Wander around Alfama, for pictures of beautiful traditional houses with laundry hanging off the balconies. Good tip? (+1) Porto, Northern Portgual Region, Portugal Check out the botanic gardens, there are just lovely! Go to a port winery for a tour and sample some vintage! Have your camera ready when going over one of the bridges crossing the river, for some great snaps. Good tip? (+1) Idanha-a-Nova, The Beiras Region, Portugal Lake of Idanha-A-Nova, a beautiful, out of this world scenery. Large lake, dry ground, some ancient trees offering shade scattered around. Around mid August host of a beautiful alternative festival called BoomFestival supplying massive amounts of art, permaculture, eco-ways, sustainability, teachings of all kinds such as yoga, fighting, dancing, spirituality in all it's forms, creating music, acoustic instruments, audio engineering, theatre, fire, jugling, transcendental views.. etc... etc... Music played; psytrance, trance, progressive, dub, ambient, ancient, all kinds of worldmusic, more relaxed electronics, partymusic,... Focus; Sustainability, getting together in creativity, exchange. Why?; Rockin' atmosphere!, meeting new people, inter-changing, party!, beautiful landscape, dancing!, hot! When?; A whole week once every two years this selfsustaining city of lights comes alive. What not to forget?; Make sure you got, or find, anything to make shade and comfortable in this mostly blistering heat. (micro climate) With so many thousands of people, don't stay too lang in stillstanding water, chances of bacteria, swimming in moving water is ok. Enjoy the peninsula, the people and the party. Good tip? (0) Portugal If you´re in Portugal and: if it´s a week day Mon - Fri if you want to have some lunch you don´t want to eat fast food you want to save money go to any Restaurant (not the 5-star ones, though! ☺ ) and ask for the "Diária" ["Dee-Ar-Ya"] which is the "Menu of the Day" - a special economy all-included menu designed for the working class. For as little as € 4/$5/£3 to € 6/$8/£5 per person you can have: soup bread drink main dish expresso which is very cheap when you compare to the "normal" Menu of the Restaurants.... and even cheaper than McDonald´s or Burger King, for instance. So that way you can enjoy a typical Portuguese quality dish and at the same time save money which you can use for other things! Obrigado!! ☺ P.S.: You don´t need to leave a tip (and it´s not included in the bill as well)... so relax! Good tip? (0) |
