Definately visit the Camera Obscura in the old water tower for a 360 degree view of Tavira.  It is a real-time 'camera' that projects an image of the town onto a screen in the tower, through a series of mirrors and lenses.

Ilha de Tavira, Tavira Island, lies south of the town of Tavira, just a few hundred metres off the coast, sandy island, huge beach, camp site and a string of restaurants
Access to the island is by ferry

If you want to go camping there is a great campsite in Tavira island. You can take a boat to arrive there (1.5€). the campsite is cheap and the beach in that island is fantastic!
