Great Local Food in Old San Juan...If that's what you want, head for the Cafe Puerto Rico, facing Plaza Colon.  The tables inside are rather close together, so if it's at all nice weather, sit at one of the outside tables overlooking the plaza.  For starters, their mojitos @ $6 are huge and tasty!   My favorite dish here is a casserole of plantains, rice, cheese and a red sauce....it's so good I ordered it on 2 seperate visits!  Their fish with a  garlic sauce is wonderful too; moist and very flavorful.  Service was friendly and attentive, and their prices are reasonable for OSJ.

if you go to pompei and you happen to go to sightsee mt. vesuvius make sure to gho into the gift shop because they have absolutely WONDERFUL jewelery and other beautifully handmade items. It is a little more expensive, but definitely worth it to say, "I bought it in Pompei".

San Juan is a cool city, but you definitely need to rent a car to see everything worth seeing.  Viejo San Juan is the stereotypical tourist area, and it certainly merits your attention, but don't spend too much time there.  There's so much to see not only in San Juan, but around it (like El Yunque rainforest), and also throughout the whole island.  With a little bit of time and a car you could see lots of neat parts of the whole island, and even swing a visit to one of the smaller islands off the eastern coasts and hit up the bioluminescent bay in Vieques or el Pozo de Jacinto in Isabela.  The city of Saint John and the Island of enchantment deserve more than two or three days; a week at the minimum will get you started.
