The true Venice of the North. Hermitage is great, Cathedral is overwhelming, Peter Paul fortress is cool (particularly when the locals are sun-bathing against the walls a day after it snows). Must do: Swan lake in the Mariyinsky.

Amazing city... with very beautifull historical center and unforgettable suburbs. Also here is the very saturate nightlife and I'm sure you really have a fun here!!!

I have not lived in St. Petersburg since 1992, but what a great city. I was an exchange student there. I went to the Hermitage nearly everyday, but the city museum is fantastic as well. I took the subway nearly everywhere I went. As far as interacting with the locals go, I was able to speak the language, so it may be a bit biased, but everyone was very kind and willing to lend a hand when I was out exploring the city.

Do not count your money on public. Stay away from dark places and do not ask locals to lead you somewhere. It can end bad.
