Moscow , with a population of 10.5 million, is situated in the centre of old Russia on the Moskova River . The capital of the country, Moscow developed around the Kremlin, a wooden fortification. The Kremlin overlooks the river, St Basil’s Cathedral and the Red Square as well as the Alexander Garden. It is now the residence of the President and the seat of Government. Vulnerable due to its wooden constructions, Moscow has been destroyed by repetitive fires (and ravaged by many wars). The advent of railways brought industrial development and Moscow became the political, commercial centre of Russia . The Bolshoi Theatre built by O.I. Bovet in 1821, and numerous museums and galleries are testaments to Moscow ’s cultural life.

If you go to Russia in the summer months (June-August), bring an eye mask in case you stay at a hotel without good blinds. The almost 24 hours of daylight can really trick your body!
