Romantic St. Lucia is located to the southeast end of the Caribbean and contains the ideal combination of water activities, resorts and beautiful sandy beaches to appeal to sun worshippers. St. Lucia was much fought over by the British and French during their colonial wars.  While the British were eventually victorious, French influence can be found throughout the island.

The capital of Castries gives a vibrant picture of St. Lucian life.  One can go to the market to do a bit of shopping and take in the sights and sounds. Nearby is Fort Charlotte, which provides a good view of the city. If resorts are your cup of tea, then the beaches near Rodney Bay will give you plenty of choice.

For people more interested in nature, there are the Leatherback Turtles of Grande Anse and the Maria Islands Nature Reserve. Hikers can take trails into the mountainous interior and rainforest. The Des Cartiers Rainforest Trail makes for a good day excursion and provides the opportunity to sight the rare St. Lucia Pigeon.

The unrelated Pigeon Island National Park contains the ruins of Fort Rodney, which are explorable and in various states of preservation. Despite its name, Pigeon Island is no longer an island (and doesn’t contain the rare pigeon either), having been attached to the mainland since the 1970s. Visitors can go to the sulphur springs of Soufriere.  Although if you want to shower, the nearby Pitons Waterfall makes for a much nicer experience.

Do go on the Pirate Ship for a day's tour and see all the beautiful landmarks on the Island.  See the water falls, swim in Marigot Bay and the twin peaks.

Okay, I have to say that out of all the vacations I've taken in my life, this year's trip to St. Lucia was tops.  The island is absolutely gorgeous with its lush, tropical mountain peaks, beautiful beaches and clear waters.  We stayed at the Sandals Grande Resort at the far end of the island, which I would highly recommend for those traveling without children.  I would also recommend doing the zipline tour in the jungle.  And, you definitely don't want to miss taking a boat ride around the island, which will give you a chance to take in the real beauty of the island.

Yes, it is a touristy stretch with nothing more than resorts; but there's nothing wrong with some self-pampering and relaxing. Do however get OUT of this region and explore the amazing rain forest; hike or bike around and find yourself some fresh coconuts to break open and eat.

People in Gros Islet are super friendly and helpful; the only annoyance can be the occasional drunk youngster (tourist) walking around.
