This small group of islands located just off the south coast of Canada’s Newfound Island in the North Atlantic is the only part of the Americas that remains under France’s control. The French that dwell on these islands are mostly fishermen. While the winters are cold and long, the weather turns pleasant and sunny in late summer and early fall. The main attractions include a long sandbar that formed in the 18th century, joining Large Miquelon and Small Miquelon into one island, and the nearby Grand Barachois lagoon providing natural shelter for a variety of wildlife including seals. Long portions of the islands’ coasts are lined with tall cliffs plunging straight down into the ocean, providing an excellent vantage point to observe the whales during their springtime migration up towards Greenland.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Saint Pierre and Miquelon
Nightlife is the best; there is always something going on, especially in summer, around July 14th. Transportation is easy; the island is small enough that all can be done on foot. If you,re not a walker, there are taxis, and you can rent bicycles or mopeds. Money - they use the Euro (it's a French island) but Canadian and US Dollars are accepted in most places (I have yet to see one where they're not). To access the islands, you can take a ferry from Fortune, Nfld or fly from Montreal, Halifax, Sydney (Nova Scotia) or St-John's (Nfld). It's lovely, really... and the people are really nice!

Cool Place.  Just off the coast of Canada but belongs to France and it is VERY FRENCH.  Haven't been there for many years but when we went the runway was scarily short....if you get my drift.  But fun to do.
