Samoa

Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa) has an array of beautiful landscapes and beaches that enrapture visitors. Combined with the Samoans exotic, slow-paced culture and way of life, Samoa has attracted many writers throughout the years and stories have been set here at a rate disproportionate to its size.

The author Robert Louis Stevenson lived in a mansion in Samoa for the last several years of his life before he died in 1894. His mansion has now been restored to its state during the 1890s and contains many of his historical artefacts.

For natural sights, the Afu Aau Falls are very picturesque and have a nice swimming pool at the base. Nearby is the Tia Seu Ancient Mound – a 12 metre tall pyramid-like structure that is the largest ancient structure in Polynesia.

For divers and snorkellers, the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve contains outstanding shallow coral reefs with very abundant marine life. Swimmers can check out the To Soa Ocean Trench – secluded swimming in two huge waterholes separated by a rock archway. Hikers can check out the crater of Mount Matavanu – an explosive volcano that last erupted in 1911.

Samoa Islands, Samoa
Try and learn abit of the language - and don't let them rip you off just cos they pretend not to understand english!! Ask someone trustworthy what the signs read!
Apia, Samoa
Apia, on the main island Upolu in (Western) Samoa, is the cleanest city that I have ever visited, in a so-called developing country. It is hardly a city, though (thankfully). The population is around 35,000. From the airport, Apia is roughly 45 minutes away. However, it is a lovely drive along the coast. Apia is the final resting place of author John Louis Stevenson. The city has nice places to eat that overlook the ocean. Best of all, Apia has not been tainted (yet) by the impacts of globalisation. The locals have managed to maintain ownership of pretty much everything. The weather in Samoa is always humid. Not even the night can offer cooling respite.
Apia, Samoa
Don't stay in Apia to long - explore the rest of the islands. Don't be afraid to talk to the locals and ps its illegal to serve alcohol on Sundays!
Upolu, Samoa
The island of Upolu is part of Western Samoa and where all the admin stuff is. There are many wonderful things to check out, like the hole in the rock by the monastery, Robert Louis Stevenson´s house and grave, various waterfalls to jump in and most of the beaches. However, all the roads to the beaches are always patrolled by Locals and they demand some money before you can use the beach. In fact everything in Samoa needs money before it will work. Unless you can speak the language, (Samoan) everyone is distant.

The Italian Pizzeria is fabulous if you are sick of getting salad on your toasted sandwich. Say hello to Jennifer, the nicest waitress you'll ever meet and so helpful. Also check out the food market for a cool experience, with all sorts of fruit to try.
Manase, Samoa
The "resorts" are not westernised. Expect "island time" aka massive delays and limited tourism facilities. The people are wonderful and friendly, but they will charge you to visit any signposted area (a waterfall, blowhole, black sand beach) hire a car and do a day trip around the island, sunday had a lot of foot traffic to and from churches but provided an interesting insight into island culture. Tane's has cheap supermarket supplies and Raci's will hire out bikes and snorkels. Don't miss the snorkelling. This is definately a holiday for people who want to relax and blob out.
Apia, Samoa
The capital city of Western Samoa, is not really a city in the western sense. There are banks and beaches, hotels and shops and a few places to enjoy the night out.
Satuiatua, Samoa
What a great place, awesome coral for snorkelling and the beach fale's are great value. 65tala a night gets you a fale and breakfast and dinner and some great memories

A great place to start a fishing adventure, a few night spots but not much else to do really. Some markets are good but if fishing is your thing get out on Pure Endulgence and let Ian and Greg show you where the Marlin are hiding

Get down to the local bars....the locals are awsome and will look after you... Had a blast when I was there.....and make sure you get a taste of the local kava...do it traditional styles if possible . If you get the chance dont miss out!!
Savai'i, Samoa
Don't worry about finding a ritzy hotel, just stop off at a small village and rent a fale (hut) on the beach. You will be spending all of your time at the beach anyway, so why not sleep there too! Its so beautiful to be able to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of water lapping against the shore.
Apia, Samoa
Aggie Grays resort is a very nice place to stay or Aggie Grays downtown. The Government is in the process of changing the driving style from right hand side to left hand side (in other words they are currently driving on the same side we do in the states, but changing to the international way of driving.) Locals are very nice and laid back.
