Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa) has an array of beautiful landscapes and beaches that enrapture visitors. Combined with the Samoans exotic, slow-paced culture and way of life, Samoa has attracted many writers throughout the years and stories have been set here at a rate disproportionate to its size.

The author Robert Louis Stevenson lived in a mansion in Samoa for the last several years of his life before he died in 1894. His mansion has now been restored to its state during the 1890s and contains many of his historical artefacts.

For natural sights, the Afu Aau Falls are very picturesque and have a nice swimming pool at the base. Nearby is the Tia Seu Ancient Mound – a 12 metre tall pyramid-like structure that is the largest ancient structure in Polynesia.

For divers and snorkellers, the Palolo Deep Marine Reserve contains outstanding shallow coral reefs with very abundant marine life. Swimmers can check out the To Soa Ocean Trench – secluded swimming in two huge waterholes separated by a rock archway. Hikers can check out the crater of Mount Matavanu – an explosive volcano that last erupted in 1911.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Samoa
absolutely beautiful beach. Fantastic snorkelling right there! Downside is lots of accommodation on beach so certainly not the most quiet or secluded beach!

Don't drink the water.  This is one place where local water can be very dangerous.  Samoa has a parasite that is unique to Samoa and if you have not developed any immunity to it, you will end up with severe chronic diarehea that will last months or even years.  It is not that common but there are other hazards in the water as well so don't gargle in the shower or brush your teeth.
If you do get unlucky enough to end up with the parasite doctors in the US or other developed countries except perhaps NZ will not recognise what it is.  It is just too specific to Samoa and too rare.  Tonga has a similar parisite apparently as well.
The cure is simple.  Six times the normal dose of Combantram does the job but don't do this without getting a doctor's advice.  In fact if you tell a doctor about the Samoan Parasite he/she can then look it up and will then know what to do.
If driiving in Samoa watch out for Pigs.  They are everywhere.  If you hit one, do not stop but drive to the Police and report it.  It is not safe to get involved with natives to apologise for hitting one of their pigs.  They get a little upset.

Apia, on the main island Upolu in (Western) Samoa, is the cleanest city that I have ever visited, in a so-called developing country. It is hardly a city, though (thankfully). The population is around 35,000. From the airport, Apia is roughly 45 minutes away. However, it is a lovely drive along the coast. Apia is the final resting place of author John Louis Stevenson. The city has nice places to eat that overlook the ocean. Best of all, Apia has not been tainted (yet) by the impacts of globalisation. The locals have managed to maintain ownership of pretty much  everything. The weather in Samoa is always humid. Not even the night can offer cooling respite.
