Sierra Leone

Hear Sierra Leone, and you will probably most associate it with civil war, child soldiers, and conflict diamonds. While it is true that these events have had a major impact on its history, it shouldn’t define the country. Sierra Leone is peaceful and much recovered these days.  It contains interesting sights such as the Outamba-Kilimi National Park. This forested and grasslands park contains numerous creatures such as elephants, buffalo, hippos, and chimpanzees. The Banana Islands are noted for their interesting dive sites and make for a worthwhile excursion. One can also visit the capital of Freetown, much recovered from the war now, and possessing some excellent beaches.

River #2 is a beautiful little seaside spot on the coast of Sierra Leone.  It is away from the bustle of Freetown.  It is just enough off the beaten path to feel like you are out to experience something, without really..

The Loma Mountains are the highest mountain range in West Africa and includes Mount Bintumani (or Loma Mansa), the highest peak in West Africa. The areas surrounding the mountains consist of rainforests with a variety..

The Banana Islands are made up of two islands, Dublin Island and Rickett's Island. Dublin Island is the closest to the coast. The islands are small, quiet and peaceful with plentiful beaches.

If you go to Freetown, the airport is a long drive from the city - they're physically close but on either side of the mouth of a deep broad bay, so it can take 4hrs on poor roads to get there or back. There's a helicopter shuttle service into the city that takes only 15mins or so and runs several times an hour. It's fairly inexpensive, a little 'exciting' (ex-Russian military choppers!) and well worth the few dollars for the time saved, and a good story for dinner with friends!

The diamond centre of Sierra Leone, this is an orderly town (or appears so if you are coming from Freetown) and features many Lebanese and Indians here. There are some pretty buildings which will make you feel you are in the wild west, which maybe you are in!

Street food, street food, street food!  Don't pass up the awesome street food sold throughout Sierra Leone.  My personal favorite is the fried plantains, but there is so much to taste.  Don't pass anything up.  Sierra Leone has some of the best fruit in West Africa (along with Ghana).  Added bonus - it's super cheap! For those of you worried about your stomaches, I ate anything and everything I pleased and never had a single problem.

Give several days to get to and from and bring more triple what lonely planet says in the W. Africa guide. It is time consuming to get there, the poda-podas only leave when they are full, as is the way in all of W. Africa. It took me over 2 days to get there, and it is very difficult to get back because it is a small town you are trying to leave from, arrange for transportation before hand, or make it an adventure and find your own way back. I rode a motorcycle with a 17 kilo backpack on for 2.5 hours.

The Capital of Sierra Leone. Has beautiful beaches and a large river Siwa running thru it. English and Pigeon English are spoken by almost all locals, among other local languages Timni, and Minde. Fruits, espacially Mangos, Pineapple, and banana (the small version) as well as peanuts are very tasty in this country. Enjoy!

The court in Freetown is a beautiful building, you should really pass by and take a look at it! There's also a nice, colorful park, near the president's office, where you can rest and flee the busy streets of Freetown.

I guess since I have been in Freetown ´98 it has changed a lot. I have been there as the Rebells started to enter the capitol. We just escaped with the last public flight to Conakry. I was never afraid like that in a flight, it was an old ukrain aeroplain.
