Singapore

Known as one of the four Asian Tigers, Singapore is famous as an international commercial hub. This city-state is also an absolute mecca for food enthusiasts. Everything you want from cheap eats and street stalls with their alluring aromas of roti prata to cafes, restaurants and high-style high-end cuisine is awaiting discovery. A must try is the Singapore Chili-Crab! And what better way to walk off all that food but to shop? Orchard Road is a famous shopping destination, with mall after mall of just about anything you want to buy. Alternatively, street markets are a good place to practice your bargaining skills. Those interested in electronics should be sure to visit Lucky Plaza,Far East Plaza and Sim Lim Square.

After you’ve done all that, learn about Singapore’s arts and cultural heritage at the Asian Civilizations Museum, or get in touch with nature at the unique Night Safari – a 40 hectare forested park where you will have a rare opportunity to see nocturnal animals – at night! Be a night-owl yourself, and check out the numerous clubs, cabarets, theatres and more. Stop by Little India and Chinatown, or take a ferry over to Sentosa Island for some R&R. Singapore is an active, bustling metropolis with plenty to experience.

Don't stop here unless you are on a shopping spree holiday. Very, very good shopping, which is really, really, bad if you are a backpacker with an already hugely overfull rucksack.

The food is definitely worth stopping here for! Eat fish head curry rice with your fingers off a banana leaf in "Little India" (Serangoon Rd) or try drunken prawns (marinated live in rice wine til sozzled, then thrown in a hot wok) or chilli crab or pepper crab, real Singapore dishes if you ask me. The mixture of different cultures has created a wonderful variety of delicious dishes so you'd be missing out if you didn't try them.

As a women, unless you are petite and wear small shoes don't expect to find much that will fit. If you're a tall woman the only way you'll find something to fit is if you get it tailor made (you're better off in Bangkok and Hoi-An if that's what you're after...).

Go to Geylang to buy and eat some amazing durian. That's if you can stand the smell ofcourse. The taste of the fruit however is divine. Very important: do NOT bring durian into the MRT subway train. It's actually against the law to do that. Geylang also happens to be the sanctioned red light district of Singapore. So be prepared to encounter some Chinese and Vietnamese prostitutes standing on the street.

Do you wanna bring something special to your loved ones from Singapore? Go to the Raffles Hotel (Beach Road) and buy some mooncakes...the traditional sweets for Moon-cake Festival also known as the Lantern Festival (between mid-September and early October) made with lotus seeds and bean paste...it may sound weird but they're really delicious (but nothing for friends of the light food)

Singapore is as clean as you imagine it would be. I enjoyed it but beware if you are on a budget it is really expensive.

Some parts of Singapore that I love- Little India, for its colors, but stay away during the weekends because of the massive crowds. Between Little India and Dhoby Ghaut, Selegie Road has a great soy bean curd stall (Rochor Beancurd) and another dim sum place (Victor's Kitchen) in Sunshine Plaza. Great food! Shopper alert: For computer equipment/ electronics, visit Sim Lim Square along Rochor Canal Road. Great deals and competitive prices.

A quiet part of Singapore to visit: Changi Village for the famous nasi lemak, strolls by the beach and perhaps a bum boat ride to an offshore island (e.g. Pulau Ubin). One of the places you might want to visit is Chek Jawa (visit the Singapore Parks website for info)- a conservation area with a variety of marine life.

The best part of my trip to Singapore was the Night Zoo. It is just amazing and so natural. I saw many animals that I'd never heard of. It is a must-see for anyone heading to Singapore.
Singapore Island, Singapore
Great modern (and fairly priced) shopping on Orchard Rd. Chili Crab is a must try!

The zoo is well-worth visiting, even if you generally do not like zoos. If you actually like seeing animals, this is a must-see. The Singapore Zoo was one of the pioneers in the natural habitat concept, and they have got it down. There are no cages, and for most animals, all that stands between them and you is a moat. Fences are cleverly hidden by greenery such that in most cases unless you are trying to look they just aren’t there. Some critters are behind glass, like reptiles, but even then live within a natural looking setting. This all creates the impression that you are seeing the animals up close. There are beautiful white tigers and some of the biggest crocodiles I have ever seen. Most of the animals seemed lively and animated. The shows and feeding sessions go on all day, and are entertaining. They can descend a bit into circus-like stunts, and this may be a bit off-putting when compared to how much effort otherwise goes into making the zoo not seem like an animal penitentiary. You can pay to be photographed with various creatures, or on ponies or elephants, so parents may need to sort out their stance on this before hand ‘cause it will look like fun to your kids. Food is everywhere and not too expensive. There are some shops, but they are heavy on souvenirs and light on necessities, so bring along any diapers and other baby maintenance gear you will need for the day. With a few exceptions, the zoo is generally flat and easy on strollers, with wide paved paths to take you between exhibits. A lot of it is in the sun, so sun screen and hats are needed. There is a zoo tram that you can pay for that will take you past all the major exhibits.

If you don't like heat, humidity, and a 100% urban landscape, don't stay here for long. I stayed in Singapore for 3 days when I was 5, and I the strongest memory is the heat. I've since been on the free transit tour a couple of times, and this is a pretty efficient way to see the main sites.
Sentosa, Singapore
Wonderful island right in front of Singapore. It houses a resort and a huge theme park, with esotic animals, dolphins shows, kart tracks etc... it's worth to spend a whole day in here but bring fresh water with you, as queues to enter attractions could be long and under a burning sun. You can get there with the sky cab that leaves from the top of a skyscraper in the southern commercial part of Singapore. If you don't want to spend loads of $$$ for a lunch (restaurants on the island are few and expensive) you can always rely on a Subway Fast Food, close to the main entrance.

It is the cleanest country! so, make sure you don't litter, or else you will be fined. Besides that, the food is amazing and fairly priced. Trains make travelling from city to city very easy. As for permanently settling in Singapore, you're looking at high taxes.

Everyone says that you must go to Raffles for a Singapore Sling. I wouldn't bother again. Its pre-mixed and is not as good as most of the other surrounding bars. Plus $20 for a pre-mixed drink, no thanks. Your better off going to the Ministry Of Sound.

If you're not a good bargainer, stay away from places like Sim-Lim square or other shops with no price-list shown. The locals may be able to get the best prices there, but chances are that you will get fooled. Make sure you check in advance on the Internet for the value of one specific item before making a purchase. Also make sure that when you buy, that you don't get a second hand item or there are some pieces missing. If you should get a bad deal in Singapore, you can complain to the authorities, who will thoroughly investigate your complaint. Never buy on the last day, so you are able to leave a complaint if something is wrong with the item.My best buy for electronics was in Carrefour on Orchard Road.

You can find all kinds of food in Singapore. If you stick with Asian, you will get great value at food-halls and food-courts. Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Chijmes are very nice areas for dining and drinking, but you will pay up to ten times more than in other restaurants or on the street. The crab in black pepper sauce is a must-try dish!

When in transit at Singapore airport, take the monorail to the other terminal - which you can do in transit without going through customs, visit the hotel and pay a fee to use the pool - you get a towel and some toiletries so you can shower afterwards. This is the best way to refresh yourself if you've been travelling longhaul. On last visit it cost me about $14 singapore dollars.

Singapore has one of the best public transport systems in the world and one of the cleanest. If you really want to experience the varied gastronomic culture of Singapore, there are a few places you MUST visit, and a few dishes you MUST try. You must visit Chinatown where you can find the wet market, and many strange and unusual foods. Turtle foot soup, anyone? A visit to Little India will leave you thinking you have stepped into a different country. Make sure to try the curries, preferrably at a Southern Indian establishment. Here is a list of foods that are easily enjoyed by nearly everyone and reflect the fusion cuisine of Singapore. Satay with peanut sauce - the street vendors in hawkers centers do it best. Roti Prata, with or without the curry to dip it in. Chilli crab - spicy, but not too hot, and very flavorful.Nasi Lemak - make sure to be careful of the chilli sauce in this Malay staple if you can't take the heat. Laksa - this coconut creamy noodle dish is like no otherChicken Rice - the quintessential dish of simplicity, chicken and rice.Char Kway Teow - flat rice noodles stir fried with garlic, soy sauce, and egg. Everyone can eat this...The list goes on and on.... for photos and locations of the best food stuffs, visitwww.makansutra.com

Singapore is the little island that could - it's probably the only country in the planet which decides that it can't survive without foreign visitors and get their acts together (hello, there's less people to organize over there - and they can do it quicker by brute force - stop smoking, spitting, and chewing gum or you're fined - so cold and yet so cool since it works). It transformed itself into a green beauty with shady large trees lining their streets and despite space constraints, still manage to provide us with plenty of public open spaces. Even a swimming pool on the 5th floor of a bldg offer a lofty view to die for. It offers almost everything any kind of tourists want, except nature trekkers and adventurers. Shoppers might not get the best deals since everything tends to be costlier here, but they will find it. So would the foodies type. Stylish culinary spots offer great ambiance, like Chijmes or Clarke Quay, and the latest, Tanglin. The culture vulture will never run out of options with every major bands, circus, and whatnot performers gracing its monumental theatres the Esplanades. With good preservation policy Singapore has some European grandeur left in its architecture, vestiges of its British colony days. The National Museum is a great place to start learning about the place! Kids would love the night safari and bookworms wouldn't want to leave the massive vast Kinokuniya store at Ngee An. Most hotels (all int'l chains are available here) are pricey, even the windowless, damp, 'cheap' ones. MRT/subway and bus systems cover most places (and there's not much to cover to begin with) so it's still explorable on the cheap. Otherwise, there are the "uncles" taxidrivers, and you can call these taxicabs companies to order one and avoid the queues. They are convenient, some accept credit cards payment and most will give you receipts.

Singapore Zoo is one of the best open concept to be found anywhere and the world's first night safari is right next door. It's a long day to do both but it's well worth the effort. Buy yourself a 3 park pass which will get you to the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and Jurong Bird Park. You can do one of the other or both, bot attractions are literally across the road from one another, and are sold on either seperate or combined tickets. We visited the Zoo in the late afternoon, went across to the Safari and had dinner before heading out on what really did seem like a safari! I am not a big fan of zoos, but this one is amazing, the animals are all in big areas, and it feels like they are in their own habitat. The Night Safari is very cool, you can take a little train so far, then walk, and you will see all of the animals wandering about! you have to be really quiet so not to frighten them, but it feels like Africa !

Try the starbucks there....their ginger bread is heavenly

Travel in singapore will not be completed w/o eating authentic singapore cuisine and hawker centres is one of the place to go.Unlike other hawker centres in other country, you would not be worrying about it's sanitation, and it's not a poor man's meal...it's really value for money..it depicts the picture of Singapore.you'll have the taste of mixture of East and West.

Singapore is the most tidiest place I have ever been to in my life. You could eat from the ground, it is sooo clean and looked after sooo well. So you have to be very well behaved too. You must not throw any chewing gum, cigarette or garbage on the street, because it will take out a huge amount of cash from your pocket as a penalty for littering.

(I went to Singpaore before Suwannabhumi was finished so cannot compare these two airports) Indian Town is very good. Food shop is cheap (in Singapore money.. but for me.. not cheap, but okay okay... I and mother ate 1 dish of rice and a food. 2 people per dish haha~ :P ... expensive nina...) Department stores were okay okay. Thailand's are better, cheaper and nicer. Ambience, weather - boring. It's hotter than Thailand and especially... there was no wind. oh... unbelievable land. I needed air.... There were some people smoked cigarrette too. Dunno who.. singaporian or travellers... not cool... super smelly fooo... Hotel - when I were there, it was like cheap hotel.. not cool like Thailand. Water was like converted from the sea water (I though by myself) The water was weird weird for me. Sightseeing - okay okay fun. There was a night safari. It was good. The air in the night forest was good too, so I like this. And the deers were cute :) Underwater world was okay okay. I was not so excited because there is this in Thailand too, and bigger. There were prostitute area like Thailand, the guide told me. But I didn't go to see though, not interesting for me. Street - this is the best thing. when I walk across the street, all cars stopped. Super stop :D The cars were not busybusy idiot like Thai street. And the map helps very much. (In thailand I have never u sed map though)

Save some money by catching an airport-hotel shuttle when arriving in Singapore.  The taxis charge all sorts of different rates for different times of the day which I don't understand.  There seems to be a late night surcharge and city center surcharge.  Also watch out for the Mercedes taxis...they will cost you over three times the price of a standard taxi!!

July to August is the best time to visit Singapore. There's the Great Singapore Sale, the Singapore Food Festival, alots to see and do during this period. We celebrate our National Day on 9th August, go and watch the fireworks at the Marina Bay area. It's fantastic!

If you are intransit at singapore there are plenty of things to do in the airport. On occassion you may find that you have over 3 hours in transit. In such a case, I reccommend that you do the intransit tour of singapore island. It is free and you will kill time that way. Make sure that you have your passport and boarding pass with you.

Singapore the cleanest city in the world! Bring an umbrella, as it rains suddenly, and a sweater as the A/C in the taxis are set to freeze you. Check out the great open air food courts, some of the best seafood, and fresh jiuces in the world!
