Once part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained independence in 1991 after the Ten-Day War. It is a small but attractive country that represents a good (and slightly less expensive) alternative to the neighboring Western European countries. You can wander through the historic streets of the charming capital of Llubljana and linger on one of the bridges crossing the Ljubljanica River, also known as the River of Seven Names. For a look at Llubljana’s history, hike up to Llubljana Castle and watch the exhibits as well as take in the panoramic views. Castle hoppers can also go to Bled and visit Bled Castle. Nearby is also Lake Bled, which has a picturesque church on a little island in the middle. From Bled, the pleasant hike to Vintgar Gorge makes for a nice day.
There is also much to see for nature buffs. The massive Škocjan Caves complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site that contains large chambers, 6km of underground passages, caves that run over 200 meters deep. Mountain climbers and hikers will enjoy the Julian Alps and Mount Triglav, while sun lovers can spend time in the resort towns on the Adriatic Coast.
