Once part of Yugoslavia, Slovenia gained independence in 1991 after the Ten-Day War. It is a small but attractive country that represents a good (and slightly less expensive) alternative to the neighboring Western European countries. You can wander through the historic streets of the charming capital of Ljubljana and linger in the old town or on one of the bridges crossing the Ljubljanica River, also known as the River of Seven Names. For a look at Ljubljana’s history, hike up to Ljubljana Castle and watch the exhibits as well as take in the panoramic views. Castle hoppers can also go to Bled and visit Bled Castle. Nearby is also Lake Bled, which has a picturesque church on a little island in the middle. From Bled, the pleasant hike to Vintgar Gorge makes for a nice day.

There is also much to see for nature buffs. The massive Škocjan Caves complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site that contains large chambers, 6km of underground passages, caves that run over 200 meters deep. Mountain climbers and hikers will enjoy the Julian Alps and Mount Triglav, while sun lovers can spend time in the resort towns on the Adriatic Coast.

I'm off to Slovenia very soon. I would like to visit Venice for 1 day. Any 'budget' ways of getting there and back from Ljubljana? And 'budget' tips/advice on spending the day in Venice?

Slovenia will be a part of my roadtrip in 2 weeks. But Can't stay there more than 1 or 2 days before going on to Croatia. Amongst Lake Bled, Vintgar gorge, Postojna Caves and Skocjan caves, What is the best to visit? Any hint regarding the driving part from Italy to Croatia is also welcomed..
Anyone have anything about Novo Mesto or Metlika, Slovenia?? I am planning a trip this summer and will be in that area for sightseeing and family.

The Predjama castle is just 10 kilometres from the Postojna Cave and is one of the most fascinating catles you will ever seen. Maybe not because of its interior but for sure for its setting, perched on a cliff in the middle of a karstic area.

An annual medieval tournament is held each July, named after a notorious 15th-century robber baron called Erazem of Predjama.

You can complete your trip to Predjama with a visit to the underneath lying karstic cave, or combine it with a visit to the wonderful Postojnska jama (Postojan Cave)

If you have visited Postojna Cave, you can't skip Skocjan Caves!! They are still fairly unknown though since 1986 they are on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The second part of the caves, the Water Murmuring Cave, with an underground river, an enormous cave where several cathedrals could fit in, walkways and bridges over 50 meter-high precipices, etc. leaves an impression that no words or photos can describe.

Don't bring your car (if you have one) into the city.  There is a parking area outside of the town to leave car.  If you choose to bring a car further in, the cost is extremely prohibitive (because there is very little parking area in the city proper).
