Not a place recommended for an civilian....stay away

Don't miss the money-changer street, but be a bit careful with your camera. They don't mind having their picture taken, but some of the old q'at-heads that hang around tend to get worked up whenever they see tourists and technology. Just stay cool and you'll be fine.

The capital of the land that doesn't officially exist, Somaliland. It is very safe and a great visit. You will need a visa (get it from Addis Ababa) and you will have to change $50 for a rip-off exchange rate on arrival. Other than that, the centre is full of local colour, a market, moneychangers, a monument with a fallen Somali plane, and loads of billboards that will have you smiling. Eat (and sleep) and the Ambassador Hotel, which is not that expensive and certainly the best around.
