Travel Tips from people who've been to Stellenbosch
Lecca il Gelato: the very best low-fat ice cream! Take a walk down from the DRC Moederkerk (church) down Kerkstraat (Church Street) and you'll find it at your left-hand side.
On the same street, one block up, is Java. It's a trendy low-budget restaurant frequented by students. Awesome value for money.
For nature lovers (hikers/mountainbikers) there is Jonkershoek Valley. Just take Jonkershoek Road from the University Gymnasium and follow it all the way up the valley. At the end is a nature reserve (no cars/bicycles allowed!). Reasonable fitness level required the further into the valley one goes. Not recommended during mid-summer (way too hot). Beautiful scenery! Good tip? (0) Wine afficionados, this is your place!!! Stellenbosch is about an hour's drive away from Capetown/Southafrica. You can find some of the best wines here in beautiful wineries which are open for visit and wine tasting. The town is located in a magnificent area, very green, lovely houses, quite a few hotels and B&B. Worth a few days' stay if you want to have good food to accompany your wine or a good wine to accompany your food. Shipping wine back home is also made possible without any hassle. Good tip? (0) Stellenbosch is in the heart of the wine country and it has one of the prettiest university campuses in South Africa. It is also a place for great eating. It is a great spot to stay to visit the surrounding wineries. If you can find it, buy So Eet Ons In Stellenbosch (This is the Way We Eat in Stellenbosch). I do not know whether there is an English version available. It has authentic recipes and captures the full flavor of tradional Cape cooking. Good tip? (0)
