Naju is worth a look if you want to find out more about the history of Korea ,there are great sites an buildings to see but it is a bit spaced out an you will have to get taxis or take a local bus plus a fair bit of walking as well.They have culture tourist office of sorts which details the history an sites and the woman who works there is a book of knowledge really but unfortunately she has no english but her younger daughter speaks good english and they gave me a tour of the town free of charge as well .Naju has lots of places for eating as with all places in korea and the people arent as xenophobic as some places but you will get people staring but thats something you have to get used to being from a different country .There is a ktx there which is the korean super train just get a taxi from near the bus staiton but make sure you leave early as tickets maybe booked or you might have to wait a while and bring a book to read or something to amuse you there is nothing at the station or near .You can go to Kwangju from here it takes only 30 mins and could be cheaper(minus comfort though and maybe standing) from the local bus terminal which is across from the express buses ie the big red ones .The bus terminals are easy to find and are near the town center across from dunkin donuts down from lotteria ,its not a big place so easy to find .

If you're travelling to Bo-gil Island off the Southeastern coast of South Korea, be prepared for alarmingly disarming locals, acient farmhouses, and a simple way of life not seen on the mainland.  If raw fish is your thing, head to one of the few raw fish restaurants around four or five oclock and you can have your pick of the daily catch.  If you'd like to bargin for a cheaper price, go there a bit later, but keep in mind, most people call it a night around 9pm.

One amusing observation is to see how the talking habits, driving styles, and overall pace of life differs between local island folks and those who've brought their BMW's and SM3's from the mainland expecting to have a riotous evening.  Thankfully (in my view), the former greatly outnumber those in the latter category.

This island is thankfully past its prime tourism-wise and thus there are many abandoned or very cheap family-run motels on the island.  Overall, there is decent hiking, the locals are VERY helpful, and if needing a break from the intensity of Korean life, some semblance of peace just may be at your fingertips.

Lots to do, not many western things though... very traditional.

Great food, lots of Korean food places to check out... pretty much on any block! And if there isn't a restaurant, there's a norybong.

20 Minutes north is Nagan Folk Village and Songgwangsah Temple - both great places to visit! You can even arrage a Temple stay at any of the smaller more local temples.
