The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is a great place to visit and a good place to support as they rescue and look after injured and orphaned elephants. You can get up really close to the elephants and watch them being fed. Do be careful though as you're effectively allowed to just wander amongst the elephants and there have been accidents in the past. Don't get too close, and don't walk between elephants (especially not between a mother & baby) or you're asking for trouble. Later in the day the bathing in the river takes place which is fun to watch. There is a restaurant over-looking the river that serves good food and is an ideal vantage point (sadly I can't remember the name of it!)
