ADD TO LIST
Sudan has been in the headlines for the last few years for all the wrong reasons headlines are made, with allegations of state-provided hospitality to terrorists and the genocidal situation in still transpiring in Darfur. For those brave, adventurous or just stubborn enough to ignore dangers implicit to going into a veritable war zone, there is an impressive desert landscape and many ancient monuments to see in this large African nation. It is not widely known that there are approximately twice as many pyramids in Sudan as there are in Egypt. The Sudanese pyramids are much smaller (many between 50 and 100 feet tall) than the Egyptian ones, but they are still impressive nonetheless. Many of these pyramids can be found at the ancient site of Meroe. The narrow pyramid tombs of the Meroitic pharaohs lie all over the sandy hills and contain some preserved hieroglyphics.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Sudan
You want to bring very very very light clothing and lots of water. The temperature can get up to 45 degrees C or 115 degrees F during the day! Way too hot! Good tip? (+1) Ask for the tennis club in Khartoum 2. It is relatively cheap SDG20 (USD 10) per session. It has men only sessions (most days) and women only times (check when you arrive). It is closed on Fridays. Great weights facilities with old but functional machines and plenty of free weights. Usual cardio machines in seperate area. Local users are friendly and helpful. No pool/sauna. Shower facilities are available. Bottles water available to buy. Take a towel. Not airconditioned, but not oppressive conditions if you visit in the evenings.
Rotana Hotel: at SDG 115 (USD 60) it is outrageously priced. Facilities are no better than a home gym although there is a sauna.
Afra SDG 30 one off payment & SDG 25 for one week (3 sessions). Times divide 3 days men & 3 days women. Clean and new equipment as of time of writing. Air conditioned
Good tip? (0) Drink plenty of water when you are here. Unlike i did, being distracted by such novelties such as internet and bucket showers i forgot to drink... needless to say i was in the local hospital with a drip.... So drink up boys and girls! Good tip? (0)
