The largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, Spitzbergen is a large island in the Arctic Ocean within the arctic circle.  Spitsbergen means "pointy peaks", and was named by Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz.  Spitzbergen is visited by flight and by some Norwegian cruises in the summer months.
