Sweden Travel Guide

The Scandinavian country of Sweden is noted for its beautiful landscapes and interesting culture. There is much natural beauty in its scenic coastlines, mountain ranges, giant lakes, and picturesque islands and forests. Sweden is also known as a progressive country that is very child friendly and eco-friendly, as well as being a minimalist design center (birthplace of IKEA).

Stockholm is a beautiful and lively capital, with its many waterways and Old Town. It is known as the Venice of the North, as it is built on 14 islands. The Old Town of Stockholm contains the Royal Palace and Stockholm Cathedral as its highlights. There is also the excellent Skansen open-air museum, and the maritime Vasamuseet.

There are many other towns and cities of interest in Sweden. The cities of Gothenburg and Malmo are attractive urban areas with some excellent museums. Visby is a walled medieval port with some excellent ruins.  The town of Lund is known for its cathedral while Ornskoldsvik is famous as a hockey town, having produced many NHL players and being home to the MODO hockey team.

Hikers will enjoy the area around Sweden’s highest mountain (Kebnekaise), which has a number of challenging hikes. There are other hikes and adventures available in the wilderness paradise of Lappland, with the legendary summer midnight sun.

Best time to go is early in the morning before the bulk of the tourists arrive. Wonderful atmosphere and lighting in Gamla Stan at this time!

Travel Tips for Sweden

Stockholm, Stockholm and Surroundings, Sweden
In Scandinavia, we spent most of our nights on overnight trains to save money, however in Stockholm we stayed 1 night on a boat in the harbour. It was very atmospheric. worked out to about $30 per person I think, so pricey on a backpacker budget, but everywhere in Sweden is, so based on that fact, it was pretty good.

Beautiful unspoilt island an easy trip by ferry from Stockhol. Hire a bike when you get there and make sure you take time to walk around historic Visby with its well preserved fortifications.
