Travel Tips from people who've been to Kiruna
If you want to experience the northern lights, wild reindeer, see the original ice hotel and go dog sledding then Kiruna is the place. Located 150 km above the arctic circle in Lapland Sweden its a winter wonderland. The town is pretty small so easy to navigate. You will find a couple of cheap eats such as a thai restaurant and a pizza at the top of the main street. There is only one bar and two clubs (Ferrum and Babylon) in town. The Scandig hotel has the one bar and one of the clubs (Ferrum) and the other club is near the town clock. Beer isn't cheep about 5 euro a pint.A must do in Kiruna is the ice Hotel (its the original)catch the local bus out and back its cheaper. Huskysafari is a good company for dog sledding (the guy's hilarious). If you arrive on a sunday the tourist center is not open nor much of anything else and the shops close around 5 on week days and 3 on saturdays.City stay hostel hotel is a pretty good place to stay nice rooms and good location...

The trip to Kiruna was not really planned more then 1 day ahead, so guess i wont be able to tell you much. Reason to go here is that i had a weekend off in Gothenburg and just decided to fly to the most north airport within Sweden that SAS flies to. Whis turned out to be Kiruna. All i knew that there was a seasonal busservice to town (no idea how far that was) 1 hotel, 1 hostel and a railway station. Took a taxi to the (a bit overpriced) Scandic Hotel, left my stuff there and started walking through town. Not much to do there except taking a hike. :-) If anyone planning to go there.. Near the railwaystation is a hostel, check there first for rooms!! Lost cheaper. And rental car or some kind of own transportation would be a very good idea!

Up in the Arctic in Sweden, its similar to closeby Narvik in Norway... icily thrilling, remote and sparse... Kiruna falls on the Scandinavian train route, so its a good bet to get a taste of the Arctic regions here if you are travelling by Eurail for instance... further up trains stop and coach or car are the only options...
