Syria can be overshadowed by other Middle East countries such as Egypt and Israel, but that is more due to perceptions of the political situation there rather than a lack of attractions. The Syrian people are friendly and Syria has some sites that rival the best in the Middle East.

Chief among the historical sites are the Roman desert ruins of Palmyra. The ruins date back to the 2nd century and include temples, a theatre, rows of columns and a monumental arch. The capital of Damascus itself is perhaps the world’s oldest continually occupied city. It was founded around 10,000 years ago, although its impressive walled old city mostly dates back to the medieval era. Within it is an atmospheric tangle of alleyways and buildings, as well as the 8th century Umayyad Mosque, one of the largest and oldest in the world. Elsewhere in Syria, the 12th century Krak des Chevaliers is a Crusader Castle that has been called “the finest in the world” by some. There is also the extremely well preserved Roman theatre/citadel at Bosra and the ancient Dead Cities ghost towns around Aleppo to see.

Travel Tips from people who've been to Syria
Leila's - just next to Umayyad Mosque, has the best food in Damascus.. And probably the laziest service, but it's worth giving it a go:) Quite expensive in comparison with other restaurants (average european level: dinner for two: 2 drinks, main course, salad, soup, starters- around 1500SP), but affordable- it's worth going there at least once in the evening, to have a dinner on the roof terrace. Unforgettable:)

Don't bother with the train to Aleppo. Even people at the train station will convince you not to buy as ticket. There are lots of buses and it only costs about US$2
