Located on the mountainous east coast of Taiwan, Hualien is the capital of the region.  It is also home to the islands largest port, and is a major transportation hub.  One of Taiwan's biggest airports is located at  Hualien.  From Hualien, the two major travel spots are Taroko National Park, named after a gorge of the same name, and the more remote Yushan National Park.
Travel Tips from people who've been to Hua-lien
one beautiful place to see, gives a new meaning to peacefull. A brilliant get away for the weekend. Remeber if you are english speaking you are basically on your own, very little and i mean very little english spoken in this region but still a great place to visit. A must on your list. Hua-lien is much different to that of Taipei CIty, which is not as open as it may seem. If you are into lies and beeing cheated then a must stop. You will be bombarded by millions and millions of motor scooters and funk mickey mouse hair styles [more on guys than girls] and everyone is a rock star or celeb of some sort." I speak English very little", is the catch phrase, be weary of cellphone shops you will get cheated. Not on my list of a good place to visit.

Taroko Gorge is a pretty and incredibly deep gorge, that is largely unspoilt. There is a seemingly endless road that runs alongside the steep grey cliffs and at night the road is not even lit up, so it's quite a hairy journey. I stayed for only a day but I'm aware that there are a number of hiking trails and some lovely scenery in the area. We had coffee at the Grand Formosa Hotel, which was set deep into the gorge with some great views, and good cake! If you're in Taiwan, Taroko Gorge should definitely be on your places to visit.

Take a day trip to Toroko Gorge.  You do not have to plan this in advance.  Just let the hotel know you want to go and they will arrange for a small tour to include you.  Get out of the hotel.  I borrowed a bicycle from the hotel and rode along the beach behind the airport.  Hualien is still a small town and reminds me a lot of how Taiwan used to be 20 years ago.  You can get to Hualien by air, but the trian ride down from Taipei is very relaxing.
