Tanzania

From the highest point in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro (5895m) to the endless plains of the Serengeti, the wonder of the Ngorongoro Crater and the mystical spice island of Zanzibar, Tanzania has more than its share of natural wonders and interesting destinations. Look into the expressive eyes of chimpanzees made famous by Dr. Jane Goodall in the Gombe stream. See the famous wildebeest migration or rediscover beautifully maintained sultan palaces. Trace our ancestors’ first footsteps at the Olduvai Gorge or set your sights on Lake Tanganyika, the longest and second deepest freshwater lake in the world. Take a safari through the enormous Selous Game reserve, Africa’s biggest reserve containing the world’s largest big game concentration. And when you’re all done, scuba dive in the famous waters off the emerald coast where beautiful reefs, sea turtles and dolphins await, or watch the sun set aboard a romantic Dhow cruise. Whatever you want to see and experience, Tanzania offers a vast expanse of magical and memorable experiences.

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano that sticks out of the undulating Tanzanian plains rising nearly 6kms high. There are several well-defined routes to the summit and despite the altitude and massive temperature difference between top and bottom it's not a tricky or skilful climb. The Marangu route to the summit will take 5 or 6 days depending on whether you wish to stay at the Horombo hut for an additional acclimatisation day. It also has wooden huts complete with beds and mattresses to make for a more comfortable night's sleep providing you bring a warm sleeping bag. The climb takes you through several varied landscapes from rainforest at the base, through the spartan Alpine desert to the frozen wasteland of the frozen ice cap, complete with glaciers which are retreating fast. All tours include a guide, porters and chef but be warned, climbing Kili is an expensive venture - the park fees alone are nearly 500usd per person. It's a beautiful mountain and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is averagely fit and fancies conquering the highest mountain in Africa - the world's tallest stand alone mountain.
Kendwa, Tanzania
Kendwa beach is awesome! Great for walking, shelling, and enjoying the exotic beautiful location! Oh yeah and great food! Can't wait to go back!
Matemwe, Zanzibar & Pemba, Tanzania
Beautiful place. Relaxing place. So relaxing that you better bring something to do or read rent a bike or just find something to do. I loved the scenery, but drove myself bonkers fidgeting. I guess I'm not the kind of person to lie on the beach all day.

It was interesting watching the locals harvesting seaweed. And for extra kicks, hop into the water, but try, I dare you, TRY to avoid stepping on those sea urchins.
Ngorongoro, Tanzania
Some places take your breath away and this is one of them. Take lots of film - sorry disk space. Go to the loo before you leave camp.
Dar es Salaam, Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania
Dar es Salaam is a bustling East African metropolis with friendly people all around. You will be haggled with a lot and charletans are all around so be warned. Do not walk alone on any of the beaches especially if you're a lady. Make sure you take a day excursion to Mbudya island - Its got some of the best snorkeling seen. A historical walk through the CBD is interresting and opens you up to this mostly Muslim world.
Moshi, Northeastern Tanzania, Tanzania
While in the markets in Moshi be careful as to not let the shop owners get away with a high price. I have been to a market there and let me tell you it's possible to get such a lower then before but you have to be willing to haggle
Zanzibar, Zanzibar & Pemba, Tanzania
shisha smoking on the roofterrace from the africahouse and enjoying the sunset stonetown
Mto wa Mbu, Tanzania
Mto-wa-Mbu has some pretty hard-sell dukas, but if you can handle it, dive in on the south (Lake Manyara) side of the road. there used to be a couple of guys who had huge selections of African music tapes and CD's.
Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Such a beautiful mountain, take a lot of pictures and it will be hot so bring a hat!
Dar es Salaam, Dar es Salaam Region, Tanzania
Der es Salaam is a tipical east and central african big city. It is dusty, hot and moist. It is realy not worth going there. But if you are, go to the fishmarket at the harbor, there you can see life as it is in an african city
