Travel Tips from people who've been to Tanzania
If you know to avoid the papasi (touts) - a lot better to do in the rainy season- Stonetown can be a wonderfully relaxed town, with small streets, beautifully delapitated buildings and great, great food. For the latter, check out the food market that starts every night around 7, currently in a little streat near the Fortress. Maybe not the best place to eat lobster (though still not bad at all), but certainly the most atmospheric one! Good tip? (+1) Never, ever walk alone during the night in Arusha and its surroundings. It is not sae, not even for a few meters. Get a cab (deal the price before). Stories of rapes, attacks, robberies, carjacks, murders and others are not uncommon, so don't ever walk at night (sun sets at about 7 pm by the way). Good tip? (+1) When you arrive in Stonetown off the ferry, don't pay any attention to the guys who tell you the hotel you want to stay in is full. Just ignore them and keep going to wherever your destination was. Most of them are trying to get commission. Good tip? (+1)
